Opportunity Description: 
Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center is a partnership between Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and the Kachamak Bay Research Reserve 'dedicated to understanding and conserving the marine environment'.

Position: Visitor Center Docent. Docents staff the visitor center desk. Answer questions about the refuge, reserve, wildlife, history and local recreation opportunites. Operate the booksotre cash register. Special Projects include: Gardening, Shorebird Festival, Marketing. When: 12wks: 4/20-7/12; 6/15-9/6 Dates may be flexible.

Logistics: RV site with full hook-ups provided for a couple volunteering 32hrs/week each. 50% of site cost provided for single volunteer. A daily allowance and some additional expenses may be reimbursed. All volunteers offered bird, whale, and other wildlife watching opportunities as part of their training to better acquaint them with the area and Refuge.

Responsibilities: Hosts represent the “eyes and ears” of the Forest Service and are to be courteous, helpful, enthusiastic, positive in conveying the recreation facility rules as necessary and must be visible to the visiting public. Hosts are provided on site living quarters but must furnish their own passenger vehicle for access to Sitka, 7 miles away and for use within recreation area and other assigned recreation facility sites.

Training: Hosts are provided a short orientation to the recreation facilities; desired how-to’s of restroom and recreation site cleanup; necessary materials; procedure and guidelines for fee collection and issuing permits and routine maintenance; how-to’s of site monitoring; information on handling the most common situations that arise; landline phones or portable radios to contact police for help or in cases of emergencies.

Qualifications:

• Host experience and retired individuals only (no couples); no pets; non smokers.

• Enjoy working positively with and being visible to the public.

• Provide own passenger vehicle transportation.

• Commit to volunteering fulltime for dates specified.

• Agree to a background check as Host handles sensitive information, has access to police frequency via handheld radio and handles cash.

• In good health and physical condition (repeated bending and lifting to clean restrooms and fire rings, litter pickup, filling potholes, splitting firewood and pulling undesirable vegetation; monitoring site use on foot throughout the recreation area multiple times daily regardless of weather).

• Able to wear a backpack leafblower.

• Basic computer and recordkeeping skills.

• Working experience with ATV (for snowplowing), leafblower.

• Able to move and handle split firewood.

• Maintain a valid driver's license.

Duties (under direct supervision) include:

• Fee collection and fee processing.

• Accessing campsite reservations from contractor online.

• Issuing picnic shelter permits.

• Maintenance of living quarters and exterior surroundings.

• Picking up litter in and around campsites and picnic sites, along roadways, pathways and in parking lots daily.

• Cleaning campsites and picnic sites, fire rings and restrooms daily to a required standard.

• Opening and closing specified gates daily (during daylight hours which vary from fall into winter). About 5-6 hours of daylight December-January.

• Providing light maintenance i.e. brushing, thinning, pruning or pulling vegetation; filling potholes in roadway, etc.

• Snow removal from access driveway and pathways immediately around cabin; experience with ATV snowplowing useful, but manual snow removal works if kept up daily.

• Monitoring use of trails, trailheads, campsites and picnic sites (involves keeping mandatory handwritten records).

• Providing split firewood for campers and picnickers.

• Keeping information current on information boards.

• Providing information to visitors as needed.

• and other necessary duties as assigned.

Opportunity Description: 
Artists from the visual, performing, and tradition arts are invited to apply for a two-week residency in the rugged wilderness of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Up to four positions may be chosen on their demonstrated ability to interpret the landscape, the natural and cultural history, or the traditional arts and crafts of the region. The competitive process is open to accomplished artists in a wide range of disciplines who submit complete applications by the November 16 deadline. A joint community-park panel will evaluate applications based on the criteria listed below. Each artist will provide two public programs, the use of an image or copy of their work from their stay-though the copyright will remain with the artist-and a brief final report. Artists will be enrolled in the Volunteer in Parks (VIP) program as part of their stay.

Who May Apply: Artists in the visual, performing arts, traditional artists

Application Deadline: November 16, 2009

Length of Stay:Up to two weeks between June 1 and August 31, 2010

Goal/Selection Criteria:To interpret the natural and/or cultural resources of Wrangell-St. Elias NP/P

Awards:Artists will receive rent-free lodging in one of the Park’s facilities and a travel stipend

The successful applicants will be notified in early December 2009. They will be provided an allowance for travel to and within the Park, as well as lodging at one of the several park facilities. Successful artists may be asked to donate the use of their work of art inspired by their residency for display or publication. Participants must provide their own food and supplies and be willing to meet the requirements of the Volunteer in Parks (VIP) program. Opportunity Description: 
Park Host-May 20, 2010 through September 10, 2010. Located 15 miles east of Fairbanks, Alaska. Park Host will have duties with visitor assistance, landscaping, litter pickup, mowing and maintenance of bulletin boards. Duties include assisting visitors by providing park/recreation information and distributing Title 36, park maps, and other informational handouts. The volunteers will assist the Ranger staff with a wide variety of other duties throughout the season. Opportunity Description: 
About 12,000 calendar years ago, during the Last Ice Age, the water level of the oceans were lower, exposing land that today is under the Bering and Chukchi Seas. During the last glacial epoch this was part of a migration route for people, animals, and plants. The Preserve's western boundary lies 42 miles from the Bering Strait and the fishing boundary between the United States and Russia. The cold but beautiful landscape is striking, ranging from the cold North Pacific ocean waters, to sparse, mountainous territory.

DUTIES: Organize, maintain and enter information into digital database for the Preserves library. Use computer databases to catalog books and videos in Preserve's library. Shelve books, keep books organized according to library system and accession new books into the library collection.

Organize digital photographs into a database. Enter critical information such as photographer, copyright, keywords for search, quality and other pertinent information.

Answer visitor information requests for information about the Preserve and requests for digital images.

SKILLS: Experience with computers and databases is required. Organizational skills are beneficial. Photoshop experience is a plus.

COMPENSATION: Housing may be available and is dormitory style. A cash partial-reimbursement for some expenses may be available. This is a six week volunteer opportunity.

As a volunteer employee of the Alaska Public Lands Information Center, the Interpretive Assistant (IA) serves as a front-line interpreter of the center.

IA may be assigned to helping with visitor services at the information desk.IA will assist with preparing and facilitating groups to the center. Duties may include setting up field trip materials and guiding groups though the center.

The center maintains a collection of education kit boxes containing resource materials and hands-on objects. IA will assist in checking kits in and out of the facility and maintaining contents of the boxes.
