Opportunity Description: Cameron Pass Nordic Ranger volunteer program.: Ski or snowshoe with a purpose- join the Nordic Rangers on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District. Duties: Patrol ungroomed backcountry Forest Service trails at approximately 10,000 feet in elevation, west of Fort Collins at the District's premier snow-play area! Inform and educate fellow winter recreationists on low-impact techniques, recreation opportunities, safety, and trail etiquette. Collect recreational use trends for the Forest Service. The Patrol takes people at all different skill levels and matches them with terrain and partners.
Opportunity Description: Hovenweep National Monument is looking for one person to help the park staff with visitor center and interpretation duties during the winter season. Hovenweep National Monument is located in southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado and is home to eight ancestral Puebloan villages that include a multitude of square, round and D-shaped towers that date back to 1300 A.D. Considered remote, Hovenweep is 45 miles east from the small town of Blanding, Utah where basic shopping and medical services are available. Cortez, Colorado (42 miles) and Durango, Colorado (91 miles) to the west offer more services, including a variety of shopping venues, restaurants, airports and hospitals. Hovenweep is less than a day’s drive to other National Park and recreation areas like the Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Natural Bridges, Lake Powell, Four Corners and Monument Valley. These areas offer many diverse recreational opportunities that include biking, hiking, climbing, four wheeling and river rafting. Volunteer duties include a full range of interpretive programs and activities, including developing and presenting interpretive programs to the visiting public in a variety of formats: evening programs, guided walks to archeological areas, porch talks and overlook talks, roving interpretation at park trails and outlying archeological areas, assisting Canyonlands Natural History Association with sales and inventory of merchandise, assisting with education outreach programs, assisting park staff with projects and emergency situations and staffing the visitor center information desk (park orientation, answering general questions, trip planning). The winters at Hovenweep are generally mild, but expect occasional snowstorms and the lows can reach below 10 degrees. Housing with utilities are available. Volunteer may have to share housing with one other person. A background check may be required for the person selected.
Opportunity Description: Volunteer will assist with many aspects of the interpretive operation and visitor center (information, education, sale of publications, maintaining information handouts, phone duties, group campground reservations, possibility of developing short nature walks or talks for spring break), roving the dunes to make visitor contacts, bulletin board maintenance, library organization, oversee community service projects for volunteer groups such as litter patrols. May assist in other divisions dependent upon needs.

Visitor Information Specialist/ Tour Guide: This volunteer can be individual adult or couple, retired. Position begins May and runs through September. The overall purpose of this volunteer position is to assist the Interpretive Park Ranger with the operation of the South Platte Visitor Center. Specific duties include the following: performing information (lobby) desk duties, greeting the public, answering questions, direction visitor activity and handling telephone requests. Conducting formal and informal talks and tours at and around the South Platte Visitor Center on a variety of subjects. Performing routine maintenance on audio-visual equipment and cleaning displays. Preparing general information, mailing packets, assisting with related correspondence, bulletins, checking brochures supplies and restocking shelves, operating project radio and telephone equipment. Opportunity Description: Determine the rates of exchange as well as the environmental controls on the exchanges of greenhouse gases, water vapor, and heat between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere. This work has been and will be undertaken over a variety of surfaces -- lakes, forests, grassland, and rangeland at a variety of locations. Volunteers will complement a research group in capacities set to their abilities and availabilities. Assistance in the office, laboratory, and field are needed. Volunteers will learn basic laboratory and field procedures for collection and analysis of gas samples, varied experience with computers to collect and analyze data, and have exposure to an array of sciences including ecology, meteorology, hydrology, and soil sciences.

Campground hosts serve as "eyes and ears" in an 88 unit campground, along with three group campsites. Hosts perform campground compliance, litter patrols, sometimes supervise volunteer groups with campground projects, assist with posting campground bulletin boards, minor maintenance duties, work outgoing lane at the entrance station on busy days, etc. This position, if desired, can assist at the visitor center or with other duties in the interpretive division. A campsite with hook-ups is provided. A reimbursement food stipend and reimbursement for propane is provided. Must have an RV or travel trailer. Golf cart, uniform shirts and jackets are provided. Elevation here is 8200'; summer temperatures range from 70s to 80s during the day and 40-50 degree temperatures at night. Opportunity Description: JOB DESCRIPTION: We are currently accepting applications for a Library Assistant Volunteer position. The USGS Geomagnetism Group is looking for a motivated, knowledgeable, enthusiastic individual to work as a Library Assistant Volunteer. The USGS Geomagnetism Group Research Library is a small collection of historical books and data records related to Geomagnetism. DUTIES: The Library Assistant will work with USGS staff to help organize the library holdings. The assistant will perform a variety of library tasks including inventory, sorting, filing, indexing, labeling, shelving, and general library maintenance. Depending on the skill level, additional responsibilities may include entering the holdings into a simple online database. NECESSARY SKILLS: The selected volunteer must possess a basic understanding of library practices and procedures, an interest in library materials, an attention to details, and organizational skills. TIME COMMITMENT: This position would best be filled by someone willing to work a few hours a week on a regular basis, at least until the library is organized. Opportunity Description: Position Description: Assist the Rifle Ranger District organize and maintain the tools and equipment located on the premise for multiple disciplines on the district. Position would require knowledge of wood working, metal, plumbing and automotive tools. Duties include, but are not limited to constructing signs, inventorying and maintaining the shop. They include doing miscellaneous facility maintenance of the office, lawn, bunkhouse and storage buildings. Also, coordinating and overseeing the maintenance schedules of vehicles on the district. Vehicles include; trailers, atv’s, snowmobiles, bobcat, etc. This may include driving on city roads and rural backcountry four wheeled drive roads. Position requires a minimum of eight hours a week and to obtain a Governments Driver’s License. Defensive Driving, Fleet training will be provided at no cost to the volunteer. All positions require people who are self-motivated, have a strong work ethic, and the ability to handle sudden changes in the work day is key in this program since the nature of our work is subject to change.
