DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Volunteer will:

• Staff the visitor center desk

• Welcome and orient each visitor

• Provide a map and information about the current tour and program schedule, gallery exhibit, introductory film, Junior Ranger program, and any other upcoming event or program

• Provide information about the history and significance of Weir Farm National Historic Site

• Operate a cash register and credit card machine

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED

Volunteer must:

• Communicate effectively orally

• Be friendly, polite, respectful, and enjoy working with people

• Be reliable, punctual, and represent the National Park Service in a professional manner

• Be able to follow direction and work as a member of a team

REQUIREMENTS

Volunteer must:

• Wear volunteer shirt and name badge

• Sign a volunteer agreement form annually (if under 18, volunteer will require parental consent)

• Record all hours spent volunteering and report those hours to the volunteer coordinator by October 15

Garden Gang –

Do you enjoy working outdoors? Are you an admirer of a well-maintained garden? Join the Garden Gang team and enjoy time outdoors maintaining Weir Farm National Historic Site’s historic gardens that are admired by over 18,000 visitors a year!

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Volunteer will:

• Assist the maintenance division with natural resource management as a member of the Garden Gang team

• Weed, prune, and plant in the historic Sunken Garden, Secret Garden, and Terraced Gardens

• Harvest apples in September and October from historic apple trees

• Use a variety of garden tools; including trowels, hoes, rakes, pruning shears, and apple-pickers

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL DESIRED

Volunteer must:

• Be able to lift/carry 20 pounds

• Be able to stand or kneel for long periods of time

• Be able to weed, prune, and plant

• Be able to use a variety of garden tools

• Be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

Park Host Needed - We are looking for two energetic and fun couples to staff a fee collection booth from approximately mid May to mid September 2010. Duties include collecting fees, answering visitor’s questions and being the first friendly face that our visitor meets. We are asking each couple to volunteer 20 hours of time during the weekday. The specific days will be negotiable, and can be consecutive or spaced apart. In return for 20 hours per week, we will provide a maintained site which includes electricity, water, sewage, trash and internet.
