Opportunity Description: Volunteers work at one of the sites located within the National Mall and Memorial Parks, answering questions and directing visitors around the city. At the Washington Monument, volunteers assist the staff in managing ticket lines; operate the elevator, and/or present interpretive programs down the monument steps. At the Survey Lodge Ranger Station, volunteers assist the volunteer coordinator with office administration and/or staff the information desk. At the Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson Memorials, volunteers assist the visitors and present interpretive programs. At the Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, and World War II Memorials volunteers answer the phone, answer questions about the memorial and surrounding area, direct visitors around the city, present interpretive programs and assist visitors in locating names on the Honor Roll and/or on the memorial. Volunteers may also drive the Information Cart on the Mall and may conduct other tours as required including, but not limited to, Mall Walking tours and Cherry Blossom talks. At all sites, volunteers assist Park Rangers in the protection of resources. During special events, e.g. Veterans Day and Memorial Day, volunteers may assist in duties as directed by the National Park Service staff.
Opportunity Description: Parents or mentors and youths have the opportunity to assist National Park Service staff in the operation of Ford's Theatre National Historic Site which includes Ford's Theatre, the Lincoln Museum and the House Where Lincoln Died. They provide accurate information and directions to site visitors and help with crowd control when necessary. Volunteers also have the opportunity to provide accurately researched interpretive talks about the assassination and legacy of Abraham Lincoln, Ford's Theatre, Washington D.C. and other related people, events and themes. The volunteer has the option of presenting these programs in period clothing using the first or third person interpretive techniques. Kids have the opportunity to choose a mentor they would like to work with if a parent is not available.
Opportunity Description: Volunteers will assist the National Park Service staff in the operation and interpretation of the Old Post Office Tower and Pennsylvania Ave. Volunteers may staff one of the information stations located at the entrance, tower, or in the exhibit area. This includes providing information and answering visitor’s questions of the Old Post Office Tower, Pennsylvania Ave, and providing directions to other areas of interest in the area.
Opportunity Description: President's Park, which includes the park lands surrounding the White House, is composed of approximately 82 acres and is home for many significant statues, memorials and structures. The three main sections of the park outside the White House fence line are: the vast open parade ground known as the Ellipse; Sherman Park, where the famous general once reviewed his troops returning from the Civil War; and Lafayette Park – home to statues honoring five American heroes, and for over a hundred years, the location for First Amendment activities. If you enjoy learning new things and/or working with the public, you may be a candidate for the President's Park Volunteer in the Parks (VIP) program. Volunteers assist ranger staff at the White House Visitor Center by greeting visitors and orienting them to the park, directing visitors to their White House tours, or helping out during special events. VIPs may also help with office duties, or with maintaining park trails.

Duties may include landscape work, minor tree pruning, gardening, staining park benches, painting, and general clean-up of the park. Opportunity Description: National Capital Region Office of CommunicationsReceptionist / Public Affairs Volunteer This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain experience in the Public Relations field! The National Capital Region of the National Park Service provides support to 14 National Parks in Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. The Office of Communications staff writes and edits press releases and other types of media, and answers public inquiries about parks, public programs, and special events. The Communications Office phone number is the public information number for the National Capital Region (NCR). Job Setting: Office, with occassional assistance requested at special events. Duties:Volunteer will assist with the following duties in the National Capital Region Office of Communications: Promptly answer public inquiries and information requests received via phone, postal mail, or email. Inquiries may include information about National Parks, special events, and public programs. Answers will be in verbal or written form. Assist with filing and clerical duties as assigned, including typing and writing cover letters for routine correspondence and other types of written communication. May be asked to assist at major public events in the region, such as the Christmas Pageant of Peace, Cherry Blossom Festival, etc. Time Commitment: One four-hour shift minimum per week. 2 shifts per week preferred. Shifts do not have to be consecutive. Shifts Available: 9 am to 1 pm, or 1 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Volunteer may also be asked to occasionally assist with special events. Some special events may include weekend shifts. Skills Needed:Strong verbal and written skills. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently. Ability to use basic word processing programs; experience in advanced types of word processing (Pagemaker, InDesign) a plus. Graphic design or layout skills a plus.
