Opportunity Description: 
Clark Creek South Boat Ramp - Located approximately 7 miles from downtown Acworth, Georgia. Volunteer Park Hosts Needed: Two Couples, 21 years or older with a factory built, self-contained, camper trailer or motor home at least 28 feet long. No other persons can live with the volunteer couples during the volunteer period. Two pet limit, however no vicious pets. Volunteer Park Hosts will work a rotating four-day on four-day off schedule and will be responsible for; park surveillance; user fee compliance; and performing park patrols beginning March 15 through November 30, 2010. Will accept volunteer couples for a minimum of three months (March 15 through May 31; June 01 through August 31; September 01, through November 30); for six months, or for nine months. Boat ramp gates are open seven days a week. Volunteer Park Host will patrol boat ramp every three (3) hours to check for fee compliance and issue user fee envelopes; check for minor violations, such as pets off leash and parking on grass; and report vandalism and maintenance problems to Project Management Office. Twice daily Volunteer Park Host will patrol Clark Creek South Campground which is closed. During the period of May 15 thru September 6, park hosts if on duty on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays will operate the gatehouse from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. for traffic control purposes however, Volunteer Park Host will not collect user fees. Clark Creek Boat Ramp Area has a launching ramp with 45 parking spaces. Total round trip tour of ramp is .5 mile and round trip of campground is 4 miles. A campsite (located adjacent to the boat ramp inside the campground) will be provided with 50 amp electricity, water, sewage, and restricted-use telephone line. Volunteer must provide the physical telephone to connect to Corps telephone line. Average 25 hours of volunteer work per week. Piedmont NWR is seeking enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to assit the staff in the day to day operations of the refuge as well as with special hunt and educational programs. Most duties will require the ability to work independently.

Administration: Duites include but are not limited to greeting visitors, answering phones, providing refuge information to the general public, filing, computer data entry, maintaining brochure racks at Piedmont & Bond Swamp NWR"s

Image Archiving: Scan slides, photos and other historical material into digital format. Computer skills required. Knowledge of scanning techniques helpful but not required.

Enviromental Education: Assist with education programs for local school children and other interested groups.

General Mainenance: Duties include but are not limited to: trail maintenance, light painting, electrical and plumbing repairs, mowing, boundary marking. Ability to work with hand tools and small mowers.

Habitat Projects: Forestry team assistance (may require the ability to carry 30lb backpack sprayer or blowers), Prescribed fire support, (ideal for retired foresters), wildlife monitoring.

Valid drivers license is required to operate gov't vehicles. Applicants with special certifications (ie: heavy equipment operator) are always in demand.

Some opportunities will require a federal background check which will be handled by the refuge.

Volunteers will be required to provide their own factory built RV. In return for 24hrs per person(couple),32 hrs(single) per week, the refuge will provide full hookups that include 50 amp elec, water & sewer. A minimum of 3 month commitment is preferred.

Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center Visitor Services Volunteer

Position Description: A Visitor Services Volunteer assists with staffing of the main information desk at the Chickamauga Battlefield. The information desk serves as the park’s main point of contact with visitors. Duties of the Visitor Services Volunteer include greeting visitors providing information about park programs, exhibits, audio-visual shows, and orienting them to the driving tour. Volunteers may be asked to make announcements about audio-visual presentations via the public address system and to work audio-visual equipment. Volunteer will also assist with answering incoming calls.

If interested, the Visitor Services Assistant may advance to presenting interpretive programs with adequate experience and training.

Requirements: Minimum of ninety-six hours per year which averages two four-hour shifts per month. Prefer weekly or bi-weekly commitment of one four to six hour shift. Volunteers are required to wear a uniform shirt and name badge, which will be provided. As representative of the National Park Service, volunteers must act in a courteous and professional manor. Minimum age for the position is eighteen.

Requirement for use of RV pad: Volunteers wishing to use the park's RV pad (30 & 50 amp, water, sewer, electricity provided) must commit to a minimum of two months and 32 hours per week.

Skills: Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Basic knowledge of local area is required. Interest in learning about the park’s resources, programs, trails, and regulations is essential as sharing this information is the top priority of the position.

Goal: In support of the mission of the National Park Service in conjunction with the specific mission of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the fundamental objectives of the work performed are:

• Visitor Services – orienting visitors to the park, the visitor center, programs, exhibits, tours, and facilities.

• Education - educating and informing visitors about the historical significance of the park and about the policies, laws, rules and regulations relating to the protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources and to the operations of the park.

Supervision: Visitor Services volunteers report to assigned personnel within the park’s Ranger Division.

Opportunity Description: 
Fort Pulaski National Monument is a wonderfully scenic park, located on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River. Primary duties consist of entrance fee collection, visitor center operation, providing information and orientation, and "living" history (including cannon crew and musket demonstration). Many volunteers enjoy working in the Eastern National Parks & Monuments Association bookstore and doing maintenance and trail work.

The park has multiple RV pads, complete with electricity, sewage, water, and a free community laundry room. Free telephone and internet access are also provided.

Typically, each individual volunteer puts in 32 hours of service per week, with couples having their "off" days together in order to explore the hisorical and culturally rich local area.

Description of Duties: - Greet visitors as they enter the visitors center - Volunteer will interpret the Fort Pulaski National Monument, it’s relevance to the Civil War and the islands impact upon the early colony of Georgia - Volunteer agrees to attend orientation and/or training sessions - Provide Welcome and Safety talk before the showing of the film of the history as needed, participate in special events and other interpretive programs as available and/or needed - Operate visitor center audio-visual equipment - Collect special event fees as needed - Complete park forms (i.e. lost & found, display inventory) fully and properly - This position may be given a project or detailed in conjunction with the Data Project Volunteer position, described separately. - May be asked to operate the Eastern National Bookstore cash register only in the absence of Eastern National employees or designated Eastern National Assistant volunteers. Evaluation: A random observation of overall professionalism, courteousness and attitude toward visitors and accuracy of answers will determine whether VIP achieved these tasks.

Volunteer’s responsibilities include operation of park visitor center and the collection of admission fees. Operation tasks encompass greeting park visitors and collecting admission fees, providing basic orientation and information on an 18th century colonial site, cultural, historical and natural points of interest in Brunswick and the Golden isles and surrounding coastal communities. Knowledge of the local area and early colonial history incidental to the site will be necessary to answer visitor questions and orient visitors to coastal attractions. Volunteer will be responsible for operating the public address system, basic audio-visual equipment, a CD player, a photocopier machine, and answering phone inquiries. VIP operates two cash registers—for NPS admissions and the non-profit Fort Frederica Association, and cheerfully sells park retail sales items. Volunteer will assist with re-stocking shelving. Volunteer will sell Golden Age and other NPS passes and distribute information brochures on this service-wide program. Volunteer regularly conducts a litter patrol of park boundaries and the Frederica Road South area contributing to the visual enhancement of the antiquity and beauty of the park and surrounding area. Volunteer assists with implementation of special events programming, including living history programs and special programs as needed. While on the road for litter patrol volunteers will at all times wear day-glo vests provided for use, as well as using latex disposable gloves and the Gempler’s “E-Z Reacher Pick up Tool” and remain vigilant/watchful for vehicular traffic. Volunteer’s commitment to this park is critical for maintaining a high level of appreciation for our national history and heritage, public enjoyment and preservation of antiquities.

The park provides an RV pad with hook-ups and a laundry facility.

Introduction:

This is a part-time, temporary volunteer position located at Fort Frederica National Monument, St Simons Island, GA. The incumbent performs non- supervisory work requiring knowledge of gardening procedures and he/she possesses various industry skills described below. If performed in a paid status would be considered grade 5 in the 5003 wage grade series. >p>A. MAJOR DUTIES

Volunteer gardeners in this position require knowledge of gardening procedures and skill in growing and tending to lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Volunteers are told which plants to tend and the nature of work to be done, and they may complete their assignments with little review during its progress. New or unfamiliar procedures are explained. Completed work is checked to see that instructions have been followed.

1. Volunteer gardeners do seasonal gardening tasks according to direction.

2. Volunteer gardeners work includes preparing soil, seeding, thinning, transplanting, trimming, pruning, aerating, and mulching of grass, ground cover, and plants such as ornamental flowers, shrubs, and trees.

3. Volunteer gardeners work in a safe manner, recognizing safety implications of the immediate environment, those working around him/her, and the visiting public.

4. Volunteer gardeners may periodically remove leaves and other debris from landscapes, formal gardens, and specimen plants.

5. Volunteer gardeners may apply common fertilizers under supervision and according to directions.

6. Volunteer gardeners may use common hand tools, such as shovels to dig and rakes to grade in normal performance of work.

7. Volunteer gardeners may, with appropriate age, skill level, and consent, operate power tools.

8. Volunteers of appropriate age and license may operate vehicles such as golf carts, utility vehicles, and pickup trucks to transport supplies, equipment, debris, etc.

B. FACTORS

1. Skill and Knowledge Required

•The worker must be able to follow oral and written instructions.

•The worker shall know how to do seasonal gardening tasks, such as preparing soil for planting, placing plants at proper depth and taking care not to damage roots while transplanting, watering plants, pruning and trimming plants, removing Spanish Moss.

•The worker shall be able to use a variety of hand garden tools and equipment such as rakes, shovels, pruning shears, hedge trimmers, wheelbarrows, seeders in a safe manner.

•If of age, the worker shall possess a valid state operator’s license if operating on and off road motor vehicles such as a golf cart or pickup truck.

2. Responsibilities

In transplanting, the volunteer shall carefully handle roots of plants to insure continued growth in the new location.

The volunteer is responsible for all tools assigned and practices safe handling and use of tools and equipment around oneself and others. Tasks must be performed in the safest possible manner to avoid hazardous situations that may result in personal injuries or property damage. The volunteer shall leave the work area clean when finished task and return tools to proper location for storage.

The volunteer, as a representative of the National Park Service, shall obey all park policies, rules, and regulations.

The volunteer performs under the leadership of a member of the Fort Frederica National Monument staff. Quantity and quality of work shall be checked by inspections by the staff supervisor. The supervisor is available for advice and guidance during the work session.

3. Physical Effort

The duties of this position require a considerable amount of bending and stooping, frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, and may require lifting up to 30 pounds. Please arrange for help with supervisor if personal lifting limits are reached. The work often requires the volunteer to reach and/or work above head level.

4. Working Conditions

The volunteer works indoors and outdoors during all seasons of the year. In working outside the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun with high temperature and humidity levels that are normal throughout the summer. The volunteer should be aware of fast approaching summer storms and seek shelter in an enclosed area. Being exposed to dirt, dust, and mud, the volunteer should consider wearing protective clothing such as gloves (provided), sturdy shoes, and long sleeve shirts. In addition, the volunteer may be exposed to disease carrying biting insects such as ticks, mosquitoes, deer flies, and gnats.
