Opportunity Description: LOCAL COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER Volunteer work period: Early May through Labor Day Job Description: Volunteer from the local community (not camping at a Corps park) will staff the Coralville Lake Visitor Center at least three hours per week from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Tuesday evenings). Primary duties will include greeting visitors and running the weekly free movie. Training will be provided for operating the equipment. Another duty will be popping pop corn and bagging it for the visitors.
Other miscellaneous duties may include answering questions about the lake area, performing visitor surveys as needed, assisting ranger staff with groups participating in interpretive programs, performing light maintenance, selling books and other items from the visitor center cooperative store, and performing other miscellaneous duties as needed. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the Visitor Center at the lake and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers will wear provided volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties. Applicants must be physically capable of performing job duties. Duties: Remove invasive weeds such as white sweet clover from the grassland and from recent plantings. Collect and plant native prairie seeds. Volunteers adhere to the park safety program and help provide a safe environment for staff, volunteers, and visitors. Qualifications: No previous knowledge, skills, or experience are required. An ability to perform moderately strenuous physical work is required. Training: The supervisor will provide a brief orientation to the National Historic Site and how the project meets its needs. Volunteer will be briefed on how to perform the work safely and with concern for protecting the park’s resources. Equipment and supplies: The park will provide work gloves, hand tools, and other supplies or equipment needed for the work. Uniform or dress: Volunteers must dress for the weather and for moderately strenuous physical work. Sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, water, and appropriate footwear are strongly recommended. Other comments: All work is performed outdoors. The weather may be extremely hot or extremely cold. The prairie is an exposed environment with little shade or shelter from the wind, though shade and shelter can be found nearby. Work involves bending, kneeling, lifting, standing, and walking.
Opportunity Description: Campground Host - A volunteer host is needed at Blanchard Island Recreation Area from May 15, 2010 to October 15, 2010. The campground host is responsible for the daily tasks of greeting park visitors, informing campers of self-registration procedures, cleaning the restrooms daily, cleaning out fire rings weekly, and informing the park rangers of maintenance needs. Volunteers will not collect nor handle money. Hosts provide an average of 21 hours of volunteer service per week and may serve for the entire recreation season. The volunteer selected for this position is provided a campsite with water, electric, and a dump station in the park.
