Opportunity Description: The Minidoka Ranger District on the Sawtooth National Forest has up to four campground host opportunities. All host sites are fairly primitive; there are no electrical hookups, drinking water is available nearby, and hosts should have self-contained RV campers or trailers. Dates needed are from May 15-Sept 15. Duties include talking with visitors, educating visitors on campground rules, cleaning toilet facilities, and representing the Forest Service in a professional and courteous manner. The level of difficulty is average, generally suitable for Adults and Seniors. A reimbursable subsistence of up to $19.00/day per couple is available.
Opportunity Description: Trail construction/maintenance positions on the Minidoka Ranger District may be available for interested individuals. The work can be strenuous and difficult, including: hiking long distances in mountainous terrain carrying backpacks, tools and equipment. Duties include strenuous manual labor such as digging trail in rocky soils; lifting, breaking, and maneuvering rock; using various hand tools such as picks, pulaskis, sledge-hammers, rock-bars, etc. Experience is not necessary, but a willingness to work hard and a relatively strong level of fitness should be considered mandatory. Extended camping trips in backcountry settings are part of the job. Tents, sleeping bags and pads are available for individuals; large groups will need to supply their own camping equipment. This volunteer opportunity is best for active adults, ambitious teenagers, and trail-oriented groups. Trail work is seasonal in nature, generally from April to November in this part of Southern Idaho. No housing is available. Volunteers will camp with the trail crew when they are on duty. A small subsistence amount of $15.00 is available for the days which a volunteer works. r4
Opportunity Description: Campground/Trailhead maintenance volunteer positions are available year-round. The duty station will be at the Burley office. No housing is available. Candidates must have a valid drivers license and be able to pass government driving tests for manual transmissions and 4x4 vehicles. Duties include driving to campsite/trailhead locations and cleaning toilets, hanging signs, and performing light maintenance duties. Duties are average in difficulty. In winter some snow shoveling may be necessary. Winter driving may hazardous at times. A stipend is not available in the off-season months (Nov-March). The Forest Service provides all necessary protective equipment including gloves, safety glasses, etc. This opportunity is most suitable for self-motivated adults who have a strong desire to be a part of public service.
Opportunity Description: Information/Education: Volunteers work with the public at one of three Visitor Centers to share information about the Sawtooth National Recreation Area: hiking, fishing, camping, reservations, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, scenic drives, historical sites, etc. Desire to provide exceptional customer service and high quality phone skills essential. Ability to read and explain maps a plus. Work also involves operating a cash register to sell books, federal recreation passes, and firewood permits. Interested volunteers may also have the opportunity to present interpretive programs. Most work performed indoors. Housing or RV site and subsistence may be available.

Opportunity Description: Facilities Maintenance: This position will be at the Sawtooth Valley Work Center located 45 miles north of Ketchum, Idaho, in the heart of the beautiful Sawtooth Valley. Work days are Monday through Friday. Duties include lawn care, feeding horses, minor maintenance work, answering telephones, sign making, painting, transporting employees to and from trailheads, and other assorted chores. Excellent for retired individual or couple. Housing provided and trailer space also available.
Opportunity Description: River/Reservoir Patrol: Assists river patrol person in monitoring river use, checking for permit compliance, and monitoring resource impacts. Maintains visitor information at put-in and take-out facilities. Housing may be available. Subsistence or travel pay will be negotiable dependent upon availability of housing and funds. Prior whitewater raft experience and good physical condition required.
Opportunity Description: Trail Maintenance/Construction: Work with trail crew performing routine maintenance and some trail reconstruction. Backcountry trips will be 8 to 10 days in the spectacular Sawtooth Wilderness or Boulder/White Clouds mountain ranges. Must be able to get along well with coworkers and be physically fit. Experience hiking/camping in the backcountry and working with stock animals useful. Forest Service will provide housing, work transportation and equipment, possibly subsistence.
Opportunity Description: Visitor Center Attendant: Provide forest and tourism information at Chamber of Commerce office in Stanley, Idaho, the Gateway to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Answer questions in person, over the telephone, and through e-mail inquiries about recreation opportunities, lodging availability, things to see and do in the area. Work involves use of computer, office equipment and incidental sales of maps and recreation passes. Work closely with local forest offices and local businesses. Subsistence provided.

Opportunity Description: Wildlife and Fish Management: Volunteer will assist with threatened, endangered, and sensitive species surveys, including some night time surveys. Work requires ability to learn species identification, to work alone in high altitude and occasionally rugged terrain, to use topographic maps, and drive 4-wheel drive vehicle. Skills in database management and an interest or background in fisheries or wildlife management are also desirable. Housing in a bunkhouse setting and subsistence funding is available.

Opportunity Description: Guard Station Attendant: Independent, self-reliant person needed to provide backcountry and dispersed recreation site maintenance and information. Fantastic location at scenic, remote guard station in the Boulder/White Cloud Mountains. Duties include station maintenance, providing information to visitors, patrolling and cleanup of dispersed campsites and trailheads and some trail maintenance. Forest Service will provide work transportation, tools, housing, and subsistence.
