Opportunity Description: Visitor Center Aides are needed to staff the information desk at the refuge Visitor Center and give information to visitors, sell items in the Visitor Center non-profit bookstore as necessary, restock brochures, re-fill birdfeeders, and answer the phone. Aides will work under the supervision of the refuge Outdoor Recreation Planner. Opportunity may be available to give educational programs to school and other groups. Work times are flexible, but at least four hours/day is required of volunteers staying at refuge facilities. Non-resident volunteers are required to work at least one day/month. Three types of volunteer housing is available- a double-wide house trailer (with furnishings), a travel trailer (with hookups), and a trailer pad (with hookups).
Opportunity Description: Lead school programs and guide children on nature hikes or cultrual resource hikes. School programs are conducted Monday through Friday from late September to mid-June. Basic knowledge of Northwest Indiana natural and cultural history is desired. School program topics include dune succession, bog ecology, 1900's era farm life, historic maple sugar production, 1800's fur trade and Native American lifestyles. All training will be provided.
Opportunity Description: Help work the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center Information Desk. This involves greeting and counting visitors, answering questions, giving directions, explaining park rules and regulations, explaining interpretive exhibits, handling book sales on a cash register, and answering the telephone. Inform visitors of upcoming programs available and hand out ranger-guided activity schedules and park brochures as requested. Update activity board. Other duties as assigned.

Position Description Assist with environmental education programs, various festivals, visitor center information desk, animal room projects, and various resource management projects. |
