Opportunity Description: Volunteer Park Caretakers-Fishtrap Lake is looking for two separate volunteer park caretakers. They would be stationed at the Damsite Recreation Area and their jobs would consist of mowing non-typical areas with a riding lawn mower and a weed eater, and policing the area and cleaning restrooms during non-contractor performance days. They must be capable of performing physical work duties in an outdoors environment. Volunteers will also serve in a surveillance capacity and as a point of contact between Park Rangers and the many visitors who frequent the area. All necessary equipment, fuel, safety equipment as well as all necessary cleaning supplies will be provided. In return, the volunteers will receive a free campsite which is located in a beautiful landscaped area designed only for the park caretakers which includes; electrical, water, sewer and garbage pick-up. Volunteer should have knowledge of local area and the park to be able to answer visitors’ questions. Operates a cash register and sells Eastern National retail materials. Answers telephone and respond to request for park information. Volunteer may help open and close Visitor Center. Volunteer may do roving interpretation depending on level of visitation. Volunteers may participate in other interpretive activities. Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired: Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of or willing to learn about Lincoln, the park and local area. Knowledge of retail sales and operation of cash registerKnowledge of early 19th century American history. Purpose of Position: Provide efficient, courteous services to the park visitor. Knowledge of early 19th century American history. Special Requirements: Volunteer will spend the major portion of work time hoeing, weeding and watering (when necessary) the garden. Volunteer will have the option of wearing period clothing or a volunteer uniform furnished by the park. Volunteer will make his or her own schedule. Work can be any hour of the day or any day of the week. Purpose of Position: Provide park visitors the opportunity to learn about live and living conditions when Lincoln was a young boy in rural Kentucky. Add to the visitor’s understanding of the significant of Lincoln’s Boyhood Home at Knob Creek, and Abraham Lincoln in America’s history. Promote an appreciation of skills needed to farm the land during the early 1800's. Eligibility:

Opportunity Description: Overview: Mammoth Cave National Park, with an area of 53,000 acres, is the home of the longest cave system in the world, mapped at over 365 miles in length. Administration of the park is highly complex with the park staff divided into six divisions. This volunteer opportunity is located within the Administration Division and functions as assistant to the park's Supply Technician. Description of Duties: The volunteer will assist the Supply Technician with the general operation of the park’s warehouse. The volunteer will be responsible for receiving new stock, documenting the incoming shipment, and stocking the items into the appropriate bins, shelves, or spaces. Additionally, the volunteer will be responsible for issuing items to park staff, and documenting the issuance for entry into the appropriate computer system by the Supply Technician. The operation of Government vehicles is authorized. Upon familiarization with procedure, and upon concurrence of the supervisor, the volunteer may operate the warehouse in the absence of the Supply Technician. The position duties may increase based upon the aptitude for the duties and the desire of the volunteer to take on more responsibility. Qualifications: • Attention to detail in stocking and issuing supplies, i.e, stock numbers, item names, etc. • Ability to lift moderate loads. • Good driving record and valid driver’s license. • Ability to stand for moderate to long periods of time. • Ability to work independently during periods of absence of the supervisor. • Good customer service skills. Tour of Duty/Time Commitment Requested: The tour of duty for this position will be during the normal workweek of Monday through Friday. The desired time commitment that is requested is 24 hours per week. During periods of absence of the supervisor, duty times will be set to provide service to park employees. There is no housing available with this volunteer position. |
