If you love history, love to meet and chat with people, then New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park has an opportunity for you! Soak up the rich history of this downtown New Bedford national park and share that love of history with visitors from around the country and around the world. Most volunteers give 2-3 hours each week, giving directions, suggesting places to visit, and providing answers to questions. Volunteer position includes use of a cash register. This downtown New Bedford visitor center serves as an important source of information for local and out-of-town visitors, so friendly and knowledgeable greeters are key to the success of our site. We welcome volunteers from the diverse neighborhoods of the area.

The collective talents and energies of private individuals and groups are needed to help conserve, protect and sustain renewable natural resources. Opportunity Description: 
Have you ever wanted to work on a trolley? If you are able to work in all types of weather and can go up and down trolley steps frequently, here is your chance. Lowell National Historical Park is looking for people who are willing work at least one shift per week on the trolley on a regular basis. Duties include assisting the motorman in the operation of the park trolley in a safe manner, stopping traffic to allow the safe crossing of the trolley at various intersections, and answering general questions from visitors about Lowell, the park, and history of trolleys. Many find the job to be quite enjoyable. Safety and operational training will be provided.

Join the Lowell Canalwaters Cleaners to help with canal and Riverwalk clean-ups.

Opportunity Description: 
Volunteer serves as a part-time technical museum photographer for the Northeast Museum Services Center (NMSC), National Park Service (NPS), Charlestown, MA and will be assigned a variety of recurring photographic assignments. The Northeast Region of the NPS has 76 units from Maine to Virginia and is responsible for preserving nationally-significant cultural resources including 26 million museum objects. The NMSC assists the parks in the Northeast Region with the processing and cataloging of archival and archeological collections temporarily transferred to the Charlestown Navy Yard.

LEGAL: All images, publications, artistic or similar endeavors resulting from this volunteer service will become the property of the United States, and as such, will be in the public domain and not subject to copyright laws. This position may also require a background investigation to perform the duties as described below.

Description of Duties: The purpose of this part-time position is to perform digital image capture and photographic support activities for the NMSC of the NPS. This will entail capturing documentary images of museum objects during cataloging projects at the request of NMSC cataloging staff. The individual will also be responsible for working in collaboration with NMSC staff in photo documenting all aspects of the cataloging, re-housing, planning and research work conducted by the NMSC in the Charlestown Navy Yard. All assignments are Boston-based.

Volunteer will photograph museum objects for documentary and archival purposes, digitally process the images, and label them. The volunteer will consult with curators, archivists and conservators to determine the views needed to adequately represent the artifact. The volunteer will appropriately handle historical objects for photographic display and determine specific images, composition, angles of view, and selects proper equipment and lighting needed to produce high quality images.

Work is on an intermittent schedule with NMSC project managers arranging and making shooting schedule assignments in advance. Volunteer will plan and carry out the successive steps of the photographic assignment in coordination with the curator or archivist. Volunteer will independently solve commonly occurring technical problems, such as inadequate lighting, poorly shot images, and equipment malfunctions. Completed work is evaluated for technical quality, appropriateness, and for meeting the objectives of the assignment.

General guidelines and equipment needs will be discussed prior to starting assignments. When contacted, please have your resume and three samples of your work available for review.

Knowledge/Skills Desired

  • Photographic knowledge and experience to capture digital images for a variety of still objects as well as portrait and event photography.
  • Creative and innovative with an understanding of how to develop compositions to meet the targeted audience.
  • Knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, compatibilities, and operation of a variety of standard and specialized (digital) cameras, including electronic still imaging, and accessories, filters, diffusers, lenses, and lights.
  • Ability to be flexible and work well independently as well as part of a small team. Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity to fragile materials and museum artifact handling is preferred.
