Opportunity Description: We are looking for volunteers to help us with the Still Creek Watershed Cleanup on Saturday September 25th -National Public Lands Day. Minumum age is age is 16 years old. Volunteers between 16 and 18 years old must be accompanied by a participating parent/guardian. Student service hours can be earned for high school students. Water will be provided. Thank you for inquiring about the Host position at Greenbelt Park. The Greenbelt campground is located in Greenbelt, Maryland located 13 miles from the White House. Greenbelt is in the Maryland suburbs. The park has over 1100 acres and is termed as an urban oasis. The campground has 174 sites with hot showers and bathroom facilities. The host receives electric, sewer, and water hookups in exchange for host duties. Host duties include doing a patrol in the park at dusk locking two gates and patrolling through the campground to greet campers. There is NO law enforcement duties, bathroom cleanup or fee collection in the host position at Greenbelt. The ranger staff is on duty until 4:00 p.m. The host position usually lasts three to four months depending on the park and host needs. Opportunity Description: Are you a people person and would like to remain indoors? Consider working the desk at the Maryland Barrier Island Visitor Center. Duties include: helping visitors find their way around the Maryland District of the National Sesahore, planning day activities for new visitors to the area, answering questions about wildlife, things to do in the area, and camping and fee operation information. Volunteers will be trained to operate the bookstore scanning cash register to assist in sales operations with the park bookstore. A time committment of one day a week for a minimum of 3 summer months and mandatory interpretive skills/communication training is required. Opportunity Description: Help reveal America's forgotten heroes, the men of the United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS). The predecessors of the US Coast Guard, USLSS crews patrolled Assateague's Atlantic beaches to warn ships away, and when needed, rescue shipwreck victims from the clutches of the sea.
Join our team of dedicated volunteers who interpet this historical niche on Assateague at the restored USLSS boathouse, equipped with a Lyle Gun and other artifacts and photos. Visitation to this site can reach several hundred daily.
The volunteer will staff the boathouse 1 day a week for three months in the summer season. Mandatory communication and interpretive training will be required. Staff will occupy a shaded but unairconditioned building in the summer months, and can be subjected to hot, humid and buggy conditions. No housing is available.

Opportunity Description: Volunteer needed to assist the park historian in the Resource Management Division at park headquarters. This is primarily a clerical position a no knowledge of history, research, or archives is necessary. Under the direct guidance of the historian, the volunteer will organize files, documents, and maps stored at the Hagerstown office. Volunteers may work a flexible schedule within the normal park office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No housing available
Opportunity Description: We are looking for volunteer trail stewards willing to hike all or part of the Billy Goat Trail, especially the challenging Section A, along the Mather Gorge of the Potomac River , or educate visitors at the trailheads, to protect the incredible natural resources of Bear Island, which this rugged trail traverses. Stewards have been active now for several years, educating hikers about Leave No Trace principles, helping to ensure they are prepared for the strenuous hike, sharing stories about the geology, plants and animals of Bear Island and the Potomac Gorge, and reducing trampling of the Bear Island's many rare plants. Active Trail Stewards can go out any day of the week, can hike the whole trail or just part of it, or can stay near the trailhead and connect with hikers before they begin. Trail Stewards wear park volunteer identification, carry park radios for emergency communications, and are encouraged to take basic first aid training to help with minor injuries. Trail Stewards are the eyes and ears for the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy, which co-own this unique and biologically diverse island, and help protect the rare habitats from the estimated 50,000 hikers annually on Section A of the Billy Goat Trail. Trail Stewards have also been instrumental in reporting emergencies and hazardous situations to park staff for a more rapid response and assisting the Park as the Trail is closed from time to time because of flooding. Trail Stewards should be avid and experienced hikers able to handle a strenuous two-hour hike with a 10 to 20 pound daypack and enjoy interacting with visitors in a rugged natural setting. Opportunity Description: ***THE 2010 SEASON IS FULL****PLEASE CHECK BACK IN FALL FOR 2011****The Antietam Creek Campground overlooks the Potomac River and the C&O Canal in historic Sharpsburg, Maryland. Nearby is Antietam National Battlefield, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and the historic town of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The Appalachian Trail passes nearby. The C&O Canal towpath offers excellent biking and hiking opportunies. Hagerstown, Maryland is within driving distance from the campground. Host duties include assisting campers with registration and providing information, as well as some light litter cleanup around the campground and monitoring the condition of the pit toilet facilities. Hosts will report problems and conditions to the Law Enforcement Ranger and Maintenance Supervisor The campground host campsite includes water and 50 amp electrical hookups as well as a septic system, phone line, and picnic table. There is no limit to the RV size.
