Opportunity Description: 
Campground Host – Enjoy the summer season from May 1, 2011 through Sept. 30, 2011 in beautiful North central Minnesota at a 119 site, full amenity campground which opens to the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. 1 couple, 18 years of age or older needed to provide information and answer questions on campground policy and Corps regulations to the public, assist park visitors during weather related emergencies, monitor park activities while COE staff is off duty, operate a two way radio, record daily traffic counter and visitation numbers, maintain current information on park bulletin boards and re-supply day use fee information and materials. Other light maintenance duties include pickup of miscellaneous trash throughout the park, clean up of campsites for incoming campers and repapering of privy’s and comfort stations. Corps of Engineers will provide all supplies to complete duties. Enthusiasm, a courteous and friendly attitude and good communication skills are highly important. In exchange a 30-amp campsite with water and sewer hookup will be offered and the use of all campground facilities and amenities. (Updated 08/26/2010)

Opportunity Description: 
Recreation Area Maintenance (2)-Volunteers are needed to perform minor recreation area  maintenance to include: removing ashes from fire pits, picking up miscellaneous litter from the campground and day use areas, cleaning the picnic shelter and minor miscellaneous projects depending up on skills. All supplies will be provided to complete these duties including personal protective equipment. Approximately 21 hours per week. If you like to bike, we have a few great volunteer opportunities for you! Assist with Bike with a Ranger trips for the public on Saturdays or with children on Thursdays. Need more flexibility in when you volunteer? Check out the Mississippi River Rover program and bike when convenient-days, evenings or weekends. Full descriptions below. Multiple trainings are offered. Volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to attend as many as possible. BIKE WITH A RANGER Saturdays, July-September 10am-1pm, Thursdays July - August. 10am-1pm Bike with a Ranger will take place on Saturdays, July-September- 10am-1pm, leaving from 4 locations (Harriet Island, Minnehaha Park, Coon Rapids Dam and Matthews Park in Minneapolis). Special Thursday trips are offered for children from the West Side Neighborhood House, Saint Paul and Phillips Neighborhood, Mpls. (St Paul Thursdays are July 1, 15, Aug 5 and Aug 20 - MPLS Thursdays are July 8, 22 and August 12). Volunteers will bike along serving as sweep and ride assistant. MISSISSIPPI RIVER ROVERS July-September, Weekends, Evenings, Weekday, anytime! This is a chance to be part of a brand new program! MRR is a great opportunity for those already biking along the river or who need incentive to get out and bike. July-September MISS River Rovers will bike on trails along the river weekends, weeknights, weekdays, anytime! Greet visitors, answer questions, provide limited bike repair (ie- change a flat) and provide information on park resources. Volunteers will sign up for time slots and pair up with another volunteer or NPS seasonal ranger. You are asked to commit to biking as a River Rover 3 hours once a month throughout the summer. Materials provided. If you would have a friend or relative you like to bike with, encourage them to join the MRR and you can ride together! TRAINING SESSIONS FOR BICYCLING VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are asked to attend as many of the training programs as possible but are not required. All trainings take place at park headquarters, E. Kellogg Blvd., Suite 212, St. Paul, MN 55101 (Kellogg Square building). You are welcome to volunteer for these programs even if you cannot make all the trainings. Some make up sessions and "on the job" training available. Orientation and Information- Wednesday, June 30, 6:30-8pm Find out about the great biking programs offered by the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Get your questions answered and meet other biking volunteers at this meeting designed to orient biking volunteers to the park's two biking programs, Bike with a Ranger and Biking River Rovers. Bring a friend! Interpretation and operations training-Tuesday, July 13, 6:30-8:30pm Basics of informal interpretation and information about areas along the trails will be presented. We will also review signing up for BWR and MRR time slots and available equipment. Smart Cycling Class- Sunday, Sunday, July 25, 9:30am-5pm (or a portion of the day) Those attending the full class will receive League of American Bicyclists accreditation for this course. Course covers bicycle safety, skills and minor bicycle repair. You may come to a portion of the class, but will not achieve a certificate attending all day.

Opportunity Description: 
Provide support to the permanent maintenance staff on a variety of duties. May include groundskeeping, minor vehicle maintenance, painting, carpentry projects, minor repair of buildings, sign installation, etc. Other duties as assigned.

Interest or background in working on maintenance type projects (mechanics and carpentry). Must be in good physical condition and ability to work in warm temperatures and sun.

Valid driver’s license and a defensive driving course (provided) is required to operate a government vehicle.

Opportunity Description: 
Join the National Park Service this summer to help connect people of all ages to the Mississippi River and their natural heritage.

Crew Leaders will receive special training by the NPS to lead small groups of volunteers doing service-learning projects in a variety of habitats. Volunteer groups may include scouts, company community-service outings or members of the local community.

Crew Leaders will work with another Crew Leader or with a Park Ranger to lead events on weekdays or Saturdays throughout the summer. Each Crew Leader will lead 1-2 service-learning events per month depending on their interest and availability. Crew Leaders will be trained in habitat restoration techniques, how to work with volunteers, plant identification, basic ecology and how to conduct a service-learning events.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to share your love of the outdoors with others!

Crew Leader volunteers with previous experience in habitat restoration, environmental education, teaching or related fields are especially desired although the most important skill is the desire to learn about the natural world and share this with others.
