Opportunity Description: Mission of the NPS and SEKI: The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world. The mission of Harry S Truman National Historic Site is to interpret the broad life experience of President Truman encompassed in the National Park Service resources in Independence and Grandview and to preserve those resources which tell his life story. The park seeks to educate present and future generations about Truman, his role as a citizen and his influence on history. Purpose of Volunteer Position: Volunteers play a critical role in the management and operation of Harry S Truman National Historic Site. Volunteers supplement the work of paid staff by providing services which achieve park goals in all areas and operations. Assistance is needed in translating tour scripts into various languages for non-English speaking visitors to read while touring the Truman Home. This is a long distance project meaning that the volunteer does not need to be physically present at the site at anytime. The English version of the tour script has already been written and would be the volunteers guide for translation. Requirements: Proficient foreign language skills and ability to translate from English to specific language. Preferably an email address for communication with NPS staff.
Priority language needs are French and Japanese but would appreciate all language skills.

Interpretation is a mission-based communication process that forges emotional and intellectual connections between the interests of the audience and meanings inherent in the resource. This position is more than being a tour guide through the Truman home; it is helping visitors build a connection to the objects in the home while simultaneously interpreting the life of the Trumans with an end result of visitor stewardship. Volunteers work side by side with NPS staff to provide quality interpretive services. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to serve as an interpretive tour guide and independently present a variety of interpretive programs to park visitors, including leading groups through the Truman home. Duties and Responsibilities: •Serves as a front-line representative of Harry S Truman National Historic Site and the National Park Service. •Independently prepares and leads tours through the site with the professional tenets of interpretation strived for. Tours can be a maximum of eight people and are fifteen minutes in length. •Assists in the opening and closing of the Truman home and visitor center. •May be required to work the park’s visitor center. This includes handling government funds, selling bookstore merchandise, issuing tour tickets, and offering general information. •Proper adherence to volunteer uniform policy. •Participate in the park wide safety program.
Skills Desired: •Ability to work well with others, including visitors and co-workers with diverse backgrounds, in a consistent, professional, and positive manner. •Ability to work independently. •Good communication skills, specifically in public speaking. •Ability to tactfully deal with visitors concerns or complaints.
Requirements: •Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and climb stairs. •Ability to work in outside during inclement weather.
Provided Training: •Continuing one-on-one on the job training with NPS interpretative staff in visitor center operations. •Participation in annual interpretation training. •Coaching session and program audits to assist in volunteer’s development of their interpretation skills.

Volunteers will assist visitors with information regarding tour tickets, and area information about the city of Independence and other local destinations. This position is also responsible for operating the park slide show on a timed schedule and maintaining statistic about slide show attendance. Requirements: •Transportation to and from the visitor center. •Appropriate dress is business casual. A vest and nametag indentifying volunteer status will be provided. Opportunity Description: The Volunteer Park Attendant will assist visitors by providing services when the contracted Park Attendants are not on duty. The following duties will be required; working with the computer based reservation system, staffing the campground fee booth, checking-in campers, marking/posting incoming reservations, answering the phone, and a variety of tasks to assist visitors. Opportunity Description: Duty Station -Table Rock Project Office and Visitor Center receptionist. Volunteer will work a rotating shift, for every two week work period the volunteer will work 2 days one week and 3 days the other week. A full days work from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with one 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks is expected for each work day. Duties include answering phones, greeting walk-in visitors/customers, filing, selling annual passes, providing visitor/customer assistance, typing, computer data entry. With a beautiful visitor center containing interactive exhibits, a museum and theater, the greeter desk is an enjoyable place to work. The VIP in this position will greet and welcome visitors coming into the visitor center, begin each session of the park film, conduct sales in the museum store, and assist with other light project work. Opportunity Description: Ozark National Scenic Riverways needs a smile! We are looking for someone who is friendly and outgoing, with good people and organizational skills to be our Headquarters receptionist. This is a great job for someone who wants to learn about the National Park Service or maybe gain some work experience for a future resume. Duties include answering phones, providing information to walk-in visitors about the park and local attractions and generally making visitors feel welcome. There is some handling of money, selling postcards and books. We will check for a criminal record, so don't bother if you have any serious criminal convictions. In return we will provide a small allowance of ten dollars per day as well as something to help cover mileage if you live out of town. We may be able to provide an RV site with an electrical hook-up but not water. (Public showers nearby.) Housing may be available, perhaps in a shared farm house. Of course you can expect a nice job reference if you earn it. You'll also get to meet all the movers and shakers in the park and learn a bit about the inner workings of a national park. There may sometimes be the chance to help rangers with school programs, special events and other activities if you'd like to tag along. We do insist on a neat, professional appearance, good language ability and good work habits. Hours are negotiable, we would love to have you every day, but even a few hours a week will help us out. Opportunity Description: Technician will assist fishery biologists with assessing impacts of road crossings on fish passage. Emphasis will be on using various measurement gear and GIS to locate and measure rod crossings. Water quality and fish habitats may also be assessed. Position requires day-long trips to remote locations in Missouri. Volunteer would provide own transportation to office and Fish & Wildlife Service will provide transportation to the sampling sites. FWS will provide all necessary equipment and training in stream sampling, structure measurement and habitat assessment. Housing is not provided. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday.
