Opportunity Description:
Location: The Ninemile Ranger District, of the Lolo National Forest in Region 1 is looking for volunteers to staff our Visitor Center. Located in the beautiful Ninemile Valley, our duty station is approximately 30 minutes from the cultural hub of Missoula Montana.

History of the Area: We are located at the Ninemile Ranger Station which is the Historic Ninemile Remount Depot. The pace is slow, with roughly 500 visitors a month, but history is alive! We are a working ranch boarding most of Region 1’s horses and mules during the winter, and growing the hay in the summer. The stock continues to assist backcountry and wilderness areas.

North of the station has two historic CCC camps where the remnants are still visible today. Foundations and walkways are present, but the buildings, as with most CCC camps, are gone with the wind. The CCC camp closest to the Ranger Station, 1 mile north, was the main training center for the early smokejumper training program from 1941 to 1954.

Many traditional activities are still alive at the Remount Depot. We provide trainings teaching people traditional skills such as, how to use and maintain cross cut saws, Animal Packing clinic for beginners and experts, Leave No Trace ethics for back packers and stock, and general mountain man basics using map and compass. More information http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/lolo/resources-cultural/index-nwtc.shtml

Duties:

From our volunteers we expect general visitor center duties.

*Office/clerical work such as selling merchandise and keeping tabs on the merchandise on hand, and informing us when we need to reorder.

*Accounting skills for keeping our merchandise books in order.

*Visitor Information: Interpreting the Ninemile history with the stories of livestock and fires.

*Tour Guiding: We have a small loop tour approximately 200 yards in total length at the station.

*Stocking brochures at the Visitor Center and at the trailhead at the Discovery Trail.

*Other possibilities include some ground maintenance work around the Station depending on the discretion of the Facility Manager.

*May have the opprotunity to feed our retired mules in the corrals with the discretion of the Government Animals Manger.

Accommodations: The Volunteer will need to provide their own transportation and camper trailer.

The Forest Service will provide a campsite location just 1 mile from duty station in the Historic CCC Camp Menard, now a day use area. The volunteers will have a locked gate at their location, keeping their area more secure. Forest Service will provide electricity and sewer at the site. There is no telephone at the campsite, but there are phones in the Visitor Center. Wireless technology has worked with a booster with a few of our volunteers.

For more information please contact Erika Karuzas at the Ninemile Ranger District at 406-626-5201 or ekaruzas@fs.fed.us Start Date: Wednesday before Memoriol day weekend End date: Wednesday after Labor day weekend
