Opportunity Description: Volunteer Internships - Environmental Education ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS: If you enjoy working with people, love the outdoors, and want to spend your summer at beautiful Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you! Number of Positions: Three volunteer internships available- dates flexible May – August 2010 Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA. The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities. The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth and church groups. The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public. Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger. Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs. Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs. All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40. Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages. A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field. Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license. Opportunity Description: Volunteer-In-Park (VIP) staffs information desk at Fort Raleigh Visitor Center. Volunteer will provide welcome greeting and hospitality, establish rapport with visitors; orient visitors to attractions at the park; answer visitor questions and provide one-on-one informational contacts with visitors on park grounds, as assigned; answers telephones. Physical Requirements: All volunteers working at the visitor center must be able to adapt from low to active volumes of visitation and activities. When present on the park grounds, volunteer must be able to tolerate weather conditions ranging from the heat and humidity of summer or periods of cold and wind in the winter in order to perform visitor services duties. Setting: The park is located on the north end of Roanoke Island and 3 miles north of the town of Manteo, North Carolina. Weather: Summers can be hot, humid and buggy (mosquitoes). Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor’easter storms. Transportation: Personal transportation (bicycle or motorized vehicle) is required to reach local stores. There is no public transportation in the area. Medical Facilities: Local medical centers provide basic treatment. The nearest hospital is 30 minutes away. Housing: Volunteer RV hook-ups within the park may be available, which include electricity, water, and sewer in exchange for commitment of 30 hours per week for 6 weeks minimum. Duties: staff information desk; provides safety messages to visitors; orients visitors to attractions and programs within and outside the park; answers telephones; operate audiovisual equipment; answers visitor questions ; conducts interpretive programs; and provides one-on-one informational contacts with visitors on park grounds as assigned. Physical Requirements: All volunteers must be physically fit. Setting: Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in the Town of Kill Devil Hills, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Standard amenities are available in Kill Devil Hills and other nearby towns. Weather: Summers can be hot, humid, and buggy (mosquitoes). Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor'easter storms. Transportation: Personal transportation (motorized vehicle) is required as it is several miles to the work site and local stores. There is no public transportation on or to the Outer Banks. Medical Facilities: The Outer Banks Hospital is located in Nags Head. Many physician and specialty medical practices are located in Kill Devil Hills or nearby towns. Opportunity Description: 06A Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Visitor Center ** Correction to contact number: Laura Sturtz (252) 995-4474 x21** Description: This volunteer position is located at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Museum and Visitor Center within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, near Buxton, NC. The Museum and Visitor Center are open year-round. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open from the 3rd Friday in April to Columbus Day. Duties: Staffs bottom and top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; provides safety messages to visitors; collects tickets; monitors weather conditions; serves as a tour guide at the top of the Lighthouse; orients visitors to attractions and programs within, and outside, the park; answers telephones; answers visitor questions, and; provides one-on-one informational contacts with visitors on park grounds as assigned. Physical Requirements: All volunteers working at the lighthouse MUST be physically fit. When the lighthouse is open, volunteers are required to climb the 257 lighthouse spiral steps several times per day, often in hot and humid conditions, to perform duties. Setting: Buxton, NC is a small village located on Hatteras Island. A small grocery store, bank and restaurants can all be found within Buxton. Weather: Summers can be hot, humid, and buggy (mosquitoes). Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor'easter storms. Transportation: Personal transportation (bike or motorized vehicle) is required as it is several miles to get to local stores outside of the park. There is no public transportation on, or to, the Outer Banks. Medical Facilities: The local medical center provides basic treatment. The nearest hospital is over one hour away. Housing: Volunteer RV hook-ups within the park may be available, which include electric, water, sewer, and laundry in exchange for commitment of 30 hrs per week for 6 weeks minimum.
