Opportunity Description: 
The headquarters for the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is located in Omaha, NE. It is also the location of the Midwest Regional Office for the National Park Service. Headquarters consist of Visitor Center staff, support staff, and technical assistance staff. The role of the technical assistance staff is to aid trail partners on how to best manage trail resources. These resources range from visitors, facilities, interpretive and education programs and materials, ecosystems, scenic landscapes, environmental threats, recreational trails, present day and past cultural stories, and volunteers. This position is designed to assist the Education Specialist on the technical assistance team

Duties

  • Volunteer will research data from various websites pertaining to developed curricula concerning the Lewis and Clark story.
  • Volunteer will collect data into an appropriate and usable database.
  • Volunteer will analyze data for usability and accuracy(Do the links work? Is the information accurate? Is it easy to navigate?
  • Volunteer will critically analyze data for its quality as a classroom resource for teachers ( Is it age appropriate, Does is align with national curriculum standards?)

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Adept computer skills, particularly with on-line research and database management.
  • Experience in curriculum development and review.
  • Critical eye for data, graphic design and navigation.

Requirements

  • Amount and schedule of donated hours is negotiable
  • This is a uniformed position.
  • Background check is mandatory.

The spring, summer and fall are full of activity and volunteers have the opportunity to teach visitors about the importance the Lewis and Clark Expedition as well as other National Parks.

Duties

  • Volunteer is responsible for staffing the information desk at the Visitor Center.
  • Greet visitors and provide information about Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, national parks, the riverfront and the Midwest Regional Office.
  • Engage visitors in conversation and explain visitor center displays.
  • Sign in guests at the Midwest Regional Office.
  • Answer phones and transfer calls to appropriate party.
  • Stock visitor center brochures racks.
  • Maintain cleanliness of front desk and visitor center exhibits.
  • Operate cash register in accordance with established procedures for WNPA (Western National Park Association) transactions.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Oral communication skills.
  • Interest in working with the public, including public speaking.
  • Interest in learning natural and cultural history resources are helpful.

  • Volunteers need to donate at least 8 hours of service a month.

Lewis and Clark NHT is responsible for maintaining the Lewis and Clark brochures as well as brochures from all National Park sites. This is over 400 brochures! The position is geared toward those who posses good organizational skills. This position is good for people who want to work behind the scenes and not directly with the public

Duties

  • Responsible for ordering brochures from visitor centers along the Lewis and Clark NHT as well as brochures from all National Park Service sites.
  • File delivered brochures.
  • Maintain a record of brochures ordered, sent out and delivered
  • Respond to visitor requests received by phone and/or email.
  • Respond to Junior submissions.

  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills
