Opportunity Description:
SPECIAL NOTE: Immediate openings available! The main visitor season is May-October, but year-round staffing is needed. Volunteers are asked to make a 3 month/32 hour a week minimum commitment for October through April, and a 4month/32 hour a week minimum commitment for May through September.

The National Monument is located in the mountains of the Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness area of southwestern New Mexico. The park includes the 700 year old Mogollon Cliff Dwellings and the multi-agency Gila Visitor center. Local recreational opportunities are extensive including hiking and backpacking, kayaking, wilderness hot springs, wildlife observation, and outstanding solitude.

Volunteers will be living and working at an altitude of about 5700'. Since we are open all year and much of the work is outdoors, volunteers will be working in a wide range of weather conditions and temperatures. Working at the Cliff Dwellings requires standing for extended periods of time and hiking a one-mile loop trail that some may consider strenuous. Volunteers are expected to be able to give guided interpretive tours of the cliff dwellings.

INTERPRETATION volunteers provide guided tours of the cliff dwellings and share information about the the area's cultural and natural resources.

VISITOR CENTER STAFF provide wilderness, cliff dwelling, and area information to visitors and sell bookstore items through Western National Parks Association.

MAINTENANCE volunteer opportunities may exist for field and shop work.

CAMPGROUND HOST: There are NO campground host opportunities at Gila Cliff Dwellings NM.

Limited housing may be available including RV pads with full hookups or private dorm rooms with shared kitchen, living room and bath facilities. One-bedroom apartments may be available for couples.

Due to the remoteness, reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license are required.

Most volunteer positions are booked months in advance but the monument is always accepting applications for all future opportunities.
