Opportunity Description: Lake Mead National Recreation Area is looking for volunteer that will help with the dedication ceremony of the Colorado River Bridge -Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (Hoover Dam Bypass) on October 16th from 7 am to 3 pm. Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties which may include traffic control, visitor information, informal visitor contacts, safety observers, and greeters. This will be a great opportunity to be part of a monumental project of bridging Nevada and Arizona. Come be part of the festivities and be one of the first to experience the 2000 foot long bridge by walking across and enjoy the vast canyon of the mighty Colorado River. This will be an ideal occasion to get some spectacular photos of the area and meet some wonderful visitors. Opportunity Description: Position Title: Lake Mead Backcountry Road Monitoring Volunteer Goal: Monitor back-country roads within the park, which will include identifying and restoring off-road tracks and other human disturbances, fixing backcountry barriers and signs, and reporting road conditions and desert dumping. Duties: Field Work (80%): The volunteer(s) will be trained to drive various distances over uneven terrain in diverse weather conditions to monitor 4x4 back-country roads. Volunteer will observe, monitor, and report off road activities and disturbances, road barrier conditions, missing or damaged signs, desert dumping, graffiti, and road conditions, for example washouts. Work will include the use of a GPS and camera to document disturbances and restoration performed. The volunteer(s) will restore disturbances using hand-tools such as rakes and mcLeods, and possibly perform minor barrier and sign repair using necessary tools and equipment. For certain restoration projects, volunteers may help install plants, driwater tubes, or rodent cages. Other duties may consist of picking-up trash, moving or lifting rock and debris, climbing, hauling, pounding, digging, reaching, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 40 lbs. Volunteer will follow park safety guidelines and take responsibility for their safety, ensure proper use, and the return of assigned park service equipment and tools. The volunteer(s) will need to have some knowledge of how to change tires or make other small vehicle repairs in the backcountry. Survey Work (10%): The volunteer(s) may also survey locations for future restoration and GPS site locations. Training and Benefits (10%): As a National Park Service Volunteer, you will be asked to take part in various training programs before beginning your duties including: GPS Training and Road Monitoring Orientation. The volunteer will be trained in all aspects of the position. Physical Environment: Lake Mead National Recreation area is located in the Mojave Desert so volunteers will be required to wear appropriate attire to work in an outdoor setting in extreme weather conditions and very little shade. Outside temperatures can reach from 32°F in the winter to over 110° in the summer. Volunteers may be exposed to poisonous or irritant plants that might harm them such as thorns or pollen that may cause skin irritations. Volunteers may come in contact with spiders, lizards, scorpions, and insects. Volunteers will be required to wear all necessary safety equipment to perform duties. Work will occur in remote areas on uneven terrain and various elevation gains. Volunteers may be exposed to direct sun, wind, dust, and possible rain. Physical Demands: Volunteers may be asked to • Lift 20-40 pounds of material or equipment • Bend, lift, pull, and push • Crouch, stoop, kneel, stand, or bend for long periods of time • Walk for long periods of time (up to 2 hours) on uneven surfaces • Be outside in extreme heat or cold (depending upon the season) Volunteers should not perform any duties that are beyond their physical ability. Opportunity Description: Commitment: 8 Hours a week. Goal: Assists the public affairs officer in communicating the Lake Mead National Recreation Areas and National Park Service mission. Opportunity Description: Volunteer Ranger Assistant LOCATION: Lake Mead National Recreaion Area - Meadview, Arizona TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum 3 month commitment of 8 hours per month. GOAL: The goal of the Volunteer Ranger Assistant is to assist Park Rangers with maintenance work and special projects related to public safety and recreational use at Lake Mead NRA. The volunteer will not perform law enforcement of any kind. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The primary duty is to assist Park Rangers by completing assigned projects such as - • Light construction including building and painting • Trimming trees and shrubs, raking leaves and watering plants • Light litter pick-up on roadsides, beaches, launch ramps and harbor areas • Light trail maintenance and construction with hand tools • Transport vehicles, vessels and/or trailers to repair facilities and other area in and around Lake Mead National Recreation Area • Transport personnel and/or equipment to or from Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, Kingman, Bullhead City, Meadview and surrounding areas within Nevada and Arizona • Answer visitor questions and provide assistance as appropriate • Direct traffic on launch ramps and parking areas and for emergency operations, road construction, over-size vehicle moving and other projects BENEFITS AND TRAINING: As a National Park Service volunteer, you will receive on the job training about the National Park Service, Lake Mead and the surrounding area. Moapa NWR seeks volunteers willing to open our local national wildlife refuge to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You would cover topics regarding local natural and cultural resources, safety precautions, rules and regulations, recreational opportunities, and area services. You would also assist staff with operations and maintenance of facilities, including cleaning bathrooms, emptying trash containers, ensuring refuge is free of litter and other maintenance projects.
