Opportunity Description: Lake Mead is looking for locals to assist with loading native plants from the Lake Mead Native Nursery to pick-up trucks. Plants will be transported to the northern most part of the park and planted to restore an area which the road was re-aligned. Time Commitment: January 4, 5, 6 and/or January 19, 20, 21. Volunteers can commit to load potted plants into pick-ups or trailers from 7:00AM until 9:00 AM. If volunteers would like to assist with delivering the potted plants to the restoration site, volunteers will be working until 2:00 or 3:00 PM. Description of Duties: Volunteer will be assisting NPS staff with Phase I of a desert restoration research project. Volunteer will be loading potted plants from the Lake Mead Native Nursery and placing them in pick-up trucks or trailers for dispersal along the restoration area. Volunteers can potentially assist with delivery of these plants to restoration research sites along Northshore Rd about 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes from Boulder City, NV. Volunteer will be training in how to organize the potted plants for transport and at the nursery for the following day. Volunteer must be able to lift 1-gal and 5-gal potted plants, weighing between 2 and 15 pounds, about 3 to 3 ½ vertical feet from the ground into a trailer or the back of a pick-up truck. For the heavier pots, volunteer should ask for assistance and work together with nursery staff or other volunteers. Volunteer may be required to use a shovel, pickax or trowel to remove pots from the ground if the root systems of the plants have grown into the ground. This may involve crouching or bending. Volunteers will not be required to identify plant species. Plant species will be color coded with flagging. Volunteer will be required to wear all necessary safety equipment, such as gloves. If volunteer chooses to participate in the delivery of plants and planting equipment, volunteer will be asked to lift same pots from truck or trailer to deliver to specific sites along Northshore Rd. Volunteer will be working alongside slow-moving and frequently-stopping vehicles along the road. Volunteer will be required to wear all necessary safety equipment, including gloves and an orange vest. Work Environment: Work will be conducted in the Park Nursery or in the field. Field work will be done alongside a commonly used road. Temperatures can vary widely throughout the year with winter highs in the 20s. Thorn vegetation such as cacti and cat claw are common. Travel by foot is occasionally required on uneven terrain.
Opportunity Description: Volunteers are needed for the following locations:Katherine Landing, Cottonwood Cove, Boulder Basin and Echo Bay. The goal of the Water Safety Volunteer is to provide assistance on Launch Ramp, serve as a Deck Hand and Boat Operator. Volunteer will provide boating and water safety information, assist visitors with water safety issues, promote preventive accident and drowning message and provide park information to the public. The volunteer, with appropriate training and certification, may operate a National Park Service (government owned) vessel and/or vehicle at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Attend and complete 6 hours Deck Hand training and 40 hours Motor Boat Operator Certification Course (MOCC), comprehensive training and guidance on watercraft regulations, “rule of the road”, recognition of unsafe water operations, activities and recognition of operating a vessel under the influence, Safe emergency operation of vessels during adverse weather conditions. Volunteers may be trained in Search and Rescue, First Aid, CPR and Automatic Electrical Deliberator training. Volunteers will be required to wear a NPS Volunteer uniform. Opportunity Description: Goal: Assist EPMT Crew with maintaining and serving tools and equipment for projects.
Time Commitments: October/November 2009 to May 2010 - Average 10-20 hours per week, flexible schedule, but Mondays required. Also on call basis when work is needed.
Position Description: Volunteer will assist with the maintaining and servicing of tools and equipment needed for project work. • Conducts minor equipment maintenance, repairs • Cleaning and maintaining chainsaws, herbicide sprayers, hand tools, camping equipment, small engines, trailers, vehicles and related equipment. • Transports equipment to local shops for professional repairs. • Drives large pick up trucks to refill fuel tanks at local gas stations and for various project support. • Occasionally assists with weed control projects in the field.
Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing: Some walking over rough, steep, uneven, or rocky surfaces may occur; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities; and recurring lifting of heavy items.
Work Environment: Work will be performed at the EMPT headquarters in Boulder City. Volunteer will be working outside, as well as indoors to accomplish tasks.
Skills needed: Handy man type skills, ability to work with hands well, mechanically inclined. Not afraid to get dirty. Works methodically, pays attention to details. Good skills in cleaning tools and keeping things organized.
Opportunity Description: TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately one hike per month, October through April. Hikes can be conducted Monday through Saturdays.
Goal: Provide courteous service, knowledgeable, interpretive resource information, and an enjoyable, safe environment for park visitors participating in guided hikes throughout the recreation area. Your work will help to protect the spectacular and valuable resources of Lake Mead NRA while fostering stewardship in the visitor
Description of Duties: The primary duties of the Hike Leader will be to conduct safe hikes of various lengths, topics, and impact levels throughout the park. Volunteers will provide interesting, accurate, and thematic information using the National Park Service Interpretive guidelines to meet the diversity of the group. • Volunteers will need to scout out the trail that he/she will be leading a hike at least one week before • Prepare interpretive information that is pertinent to the trail and the surrounding area that is interesting to the audience and accurate in content • Need to research the history and significance of Lake Mead National Recreation Area in order to provide the guides hikes • Must be able to hike the designated trail without difficulty and be able to carry a backpack weighing up to 20 pounds for the duration of the trip • Volunteers must be trained in First Aid and CPR and must be able to provide any necessary first aid to individuals if needed. Training can be provided to those who are not currently certified
Responsibilities: Volunteers will follow park safety guidelines, carry a park radio and know how to communicate with park personnel and dispatch. They will record stats on the same day as the hike, be on time, and wear a proper Volunteer National Park Service uniform. Volunteers can operate a government vehicle to reach trailheads.
Skills needed: Enjoy working with a diverse group of people, familiarity with Lake Mead trails and have knowledge of the area. Be able to remain calm and courteous if an emergency situation arises. Must possess a valid state driver’s license to operate a government vehicle and have a clean driving record.
Benefits and Training: As a volunteer, you will receive on the job training about the National Park Service mission and policies, Lake Mead NRA’s natural and cultural history, and the surrounding areas. Volunteers will receive 8 hour training in October on interpretive techniques. Volunteers will be trained in First Aid and CPR. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with people from diverse backgrounds and share their love for the National Parks.
Qualifications: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, enjoy working with people from a variety of backgrounds, and have a willingness to learn about the park's resources. Volunteers must be willing to follow NPS Interpretive and Safety guidelines and attend instruction on various topics pertaining to their position.
Physical Demands: Be in good physical condition and capable of hiking over the appropriate hike terrain. This terrain may vary from a flat sandy area, to gentle rolling hills and washes, to steep, rocky terrain and up/down a variety of elevation gains. Hike lengths may vary from ½ mile up to 5 miles round trip. Volunteer will be working outside in temperatures ranging from 45 degrees to 100 degrees and a variety of weather conditions.
Opportunity Description: Volunteers are needed at various campgrounds around the park - Cottonwood Cove and Echo Bay. The VIP Campground Host is the eyes and ears in the campgrounds for the National Park Service at Lake Mead NRA. The VIP Campground Host serves as the entertainer and guardian steward for the campground area. The VIP Campground Host greets the visitor, answers campground, park and surrounding area questions in an informed and courteous manner. The Host checks for payment stubs for nightly stays. The majority of the volunteer time (80%+) will be spent greeting, visiting and disseminating information to the visitor and checking for proper payment of campground fees. While the VIP Campground Host may perform other duties, including radio dispatch, minor emergency services, light maintenance grounds grooming and restocking of supplies in the restrooms, these responsibilities constitute only 20% of the volunteer time. Volunteers will be required to wear a NPS Volunteer Uniform.
