Opportunity Description: Enjoy the peace and tranquility of a pristine area that is just being discovered. Escape the heat of the summer on the cool and fantastically beautiful southern Oregon coast. Learn about the life histories and habitat needs of birds and marine mammals living on the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and share that knowledge with the public. The US Fish & Wildlife Service’s Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex has teamed up with the Refuge’s Friends Group, Shoreline Education for Awareness, Inc. (SEA Inc.) to offer an up to 5 months volunteer opportunity. Each volunteer will be prepared by SEA and qualified as a coastline wildlife interpreter and integrated into the interpretation schedule with other wildlife interpreters of this regionally known, well respected educational organization. Volunteer duties will include providing interpretation about the seabirds and marine mammals of Oregon Islands NWR at a variety of locations including Coquille Point in Bandon Oregon , Simpson Reef on Cape Arago, near Charleston Oregon and at local campfire programs. Volunteers will use binoculars, field guides and spotting scopes provided by US Fish & Wildlife Service and SEA to help visitors see and understand this amazing eco-system. One of 3 full hookup sites will be provided in exchange for 24 hours of volunteer effort over 4 days per week. Requirements for these positions include a valid driver license, enthusiasm, willingness to learn and work weekends and holidays and to interact with the public in a friendly and professional manner. Government vehicles may be used for travel to interpretation sites, but volunteers need to be willing to use their own occasionally. Because of the significant education investment by the Friends Group, volunteers who can commit for a larger part of the season ( April 21 to September 7) are sought. Preference will be given to those who can commit to the full 4.5 months. Shopping is a short distance from all RV sites. A personally owned vehicle is needed for this activity. The recreational opportunities on the Oregon Coast are legendary and volunteers will have ample time for hiking, surfing, fishing, crabbing, kayaking, sightseeing and other activities. Opportunity Description: Natural Resource Volunteer Needed – March 01, 2010 to mid May 2010. Resource Volunteers will assist Park Rangers, often independently, with: Invasive and Noxious Weed Removal, Monitoring and maintaining trails, Litter Removal, Visitor Surveys, Posting Reserved Notices and Preparing Picnic Shelter, Assisting Ranger staff with Outreach Programs. None of these tasks are intended to be the sole duties performed by the Resource Volunteers.
A vehicle will be provided on assigned work days. Job requires working in adverse weather conditions. Job also requires that the Volunteer needs to meet certain physical standards to perform these tasks. Such as, the ability to lift 20lbs, work while walking or standing for up to 6 hours a day, and operate a variety of outdoor power equipment. Some tasks may require the Volunteer to wear protective equipment. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own safety toe boots. Other protective equipment will be provided by the Ranger Staff. Couples will work together. Opportunity Description: Couple needed for a reservation campground. Duties:Host will be responsable for reservations, doing a tally sheet for the license plate numbers between 7a.m & 8 a.m each morning, open/close gate & showers 0600 & 2200 (this is a shared duty with the caretakers), litter pick up, assist caretaker if needed, cover for the caretakers on their day(s) off, this involves restroom & shower cleaning, they will cover for you on yours. Opportunity Description: INTERPRETIVE HOST POSITIONS AVAILABLE DECEMBER 2009 - APRIL 2010, 2 month minimum. Be a lighthouse keeper, tidepool docent, information desk attendant, and a wildlife interpreter at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area! POSITION OVERVIEW:Hosts assist visitors of all age with emphasis on helping visitors to form connections with the site’s natural and cultural resources. Visitor safety and resource protection are also key elements. Trailer/RV pads with FHU and ocean views are provided.TIME: December 2009 through April 2010 and from November 2010. Opportunities available year-round. Hosts contribute approximately 25 hours per week; working five, 5-hour days with two consecutive days off. DUTIES:• Hosts greet visitors and provide interpretation at the historic Yaquina Head Lighthouse, often in period (1880s) clothing. • Hosts provide visitors with site, local and regional information at theYaquina Head Interpretive Center, which was dedicated in 1997. • Hosts provide point (on-the-spot) interpretation at wildlife observation areas. Emphasis changes according to the season and tides, but may include gray whales, harbor seals, tidepool life, and seabirds. QUALIFICATIONS: • All hosts must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, show a willingness to work with, and get along with a variety of co-workers and visitors of all ages. • A basic knowledge of interpretive techniques, Western US history, and wildlife is helpful, but training will be provided. • Hosts should be able to climb and descend the 100-plus steps to the top of the lighthouse and down to the tidepools. Some accommodations can be made. AREA INFORMATION:Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is a 100-acre day-use area managed by the Bureau of Land Management (Department of Interior). The park is located on prominent headland just three miles north of Newport, on Oregon’s scenic central coast. Over 20,000 seabirds nest seasonally on the headland’s cliffs and near-shore rocks. Gray whales, harbor seals and a multitude of intertidal creatures are also visible much of the year. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse has been functioning as an aid to navigation since 1873. The site is open year-round during daylight hours. Visitation is over 300,000 per year.
Opportunity Description: New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) Site Host Position Description BLM provides the site host with: • RV hook-up station: water, power (electricity), sewer, phone (local calls only). • Reimbursement to be negotiated • Reimburse mileage for using personal vehicle for BLM-approved travel. • Use of the learning center/shop is allowed on a limited basis (i.e. washer/dryer, kitchen facilities, tools, etc.). No overnight facilities available for family or friends. • Uniform items to identify as volunteer for the BLM. The host site is located at Storm Ranch, the main visitor use area for New River ACEC. Storm Ranch is located approximately 13 miles south of Bandon. The site host is responsible for the following duties: Visitor Services / Public Contact and Environmental Education • Open the learning center to the public from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Open the blinds, turn on music and lights, and check displays. • Welcome visitors, provide information about the area, and inform them of the rules/regulations. Welcoming visitors is meant to be a low key activity. • Provide trail guides and surveys to the public. Encourage visitors to fill out and return surveys at the end of their visit. • Occasionally assist with coordinating overnight-stays in the learning center for BLM-approved guests (providing keys, information on cleaning, etc.). • Coordinate reservations for use of the learning center. Help set up the main room for meetings, workshops, etc. • Assist with environmental education and interpretive programs for students and adults. • Assist with coordination and conducting of National Public Lands Day and other events. Visitor-Use/Resource Monitoring • Record visitor-use levels and other data collection. • Record number of visits to the learning center. • Check site condition and visitor use at other parts of the ACEC, including Four Mile, Lost Lake and Floras Lake. • Assist with wildlife, plant, and recreation use monitoring as requested. • Assist with Northwest Youth Corps as requested. • Assist with various recreation and resource management projects as requested. • Data collection and monitoring as requested. Maintenance • Routinely clean facilities learning center after special events and restrooms • Collect garbage from cans and place in totes and set out every other Wednesday for collection. • Pick-up litter along roadways, parking areas, and boat launch as needed. • Weed eating and/or weed pulling as needed. Management Support / Site Presence • Inform BLM staff and law enforcement of violations, emergency needs, and other circumstances that require attention. The site host is not responsible for enforcement. • Open and close the entrance gate on a daily basis (sunrise to sunset). The site host must make prior arrangements with the BLM if a situation arises when you are not on site overnight. • Site host is required to live on site and must be present and available to the public at least 8 hours per day, 5 days per week between the hours of sunrise and sunset including weekends. Schedule will be determined by the Volunteer Supervisor.
Additional Requirements
• Pets must be kept on a leash or otherwise physically restricted. You are responsible for cleaning up after your pet and its behavior. No more than 2 dogs are permitted.
• Host site must be kept clean and neat with a minimal amount of personal possessions outside of the host’s trailer/RV. Storage of personal possessions within or adjacent to BLM facilities (storage building) is not permitted.
• Attend volunteer training as requested by the Volunteer Supervisor such as Basic First Aid/CPR and Safety.
• Must have own vehicle for personal use.
• Must have a vehicle kept on-site that is capable of moving your RV as needed in case of evacuations from storms.
- The interest and ability to talk to people of all ages and backgrounds in a friendly, non- combative manner. Able to approach visitors first without having to wait for them to approach you.
• The ability to walk for a minimum of three miles on sandy trails that go up and down sand dunes while carrying a light pack, and walk miles on the beach in windy weather.
• The ability to provide assistance lifting kayaks in and out of the river, cleaned and into storage area.
• The ability to stoop, bend, and lift a minimum of 35 pounds.
• Willingness and ability to engage visitors in friendly conversation and educational programs.

Host duties includes both Edson and nearby Sixes Campgrounds and associated day use area. The site host is responsible for the following duties: Visitor Services / Public Contact • Welcome visitors, provide information about the area, inform them of the rules/regulations, and help them register for campsites and/or day use. • Help take reservations for group camp site. • Assist with any environmental education and/or interpretive programs. Visitor-Use/Resource Monitoring • Record visitor-use levels and other reports as requested (forms will be provided). • Fee collection and management of fees. Maintenance • Routinely clean restrooms. • Grounds-keeping as requested (weed eating, assistance with trail projects). • Collect garbage from cans and place in dumpsters. • Pick-up litter along campsites, roadways, parking areas, and boat launch as needed. • Clean fire rings and barbeques. • Perform other minor maintenance tasks and recreation projects as requested. Opportunity Description: Looking for an energetic couple as caretakers in an ATV Campground. Duties include: Cleaning restrooms & keeping stocked during the day, cleaning showers, weed eating, blowing, mowing. pick up litter, clean fire pits, & general campground maintenance. Gate/shower opening at 0600 and closing at 2200 is shared with the campground host. Opportunity Description: I am looking for the right volunter host or host couple to assist with day-to-day public contact and fee collection duties at one of the Eugene District's premiere day-use sites. This site, located approximately 16 miles northeast of the city of Springfield, is a popular destination for small, informal gatherings and large-scale, special events (e.g., weddings, reunions, graduation parties, etc.) The site includes a 7-mile hiking system; grass ball field; sand volleyball court; horshoe pits; seasonal swimming area; sandy beach; playground; picnicking sites; and group shelters w/fireplaces, electricity, stoves, sinks and lights. Modular housing with full utilities and air conditioning is available on site temporarily. Selected volunteer/s can reside rent-free while serving as site volunteer host/s. Basic utility costs (e.g., electricity, water, garbage, phone) are covered by the U.S. government. The Eugene District will remove the modular housing in the future, at which time the selected volunteer/s will be responsible for providing their own accommodations (i.e., self-contained recreational vehicle). A year-round host/s is desired. Weekend and evening presence is necessary during the high-use summer season (June 15-September 15). Although the site will be closed 6 months during the year (November-April), on-site host presence throughout the year remains desirable.
