Opportunity Description: Wildlife and Forestry Management Volunteer - Volunteers will be assisting with natural resource management work on Thurmond Lake, GA/SC. Duties include: wildlife surveys for bald eagles, waterfowl, deer, and quail, prescribed fire, managed deer and turkey hunts, endangered species surveys, marking and cruising timber, data collection and maintenance using GPS and GIS, and water quality monitoring. The type of volunteer opportunities available vary with the season. The work can be physically demanding. Since much of the field work is done with Ranger personnel, volunteers are needed mainly on weekdays during normal business hours. Thurmond Lake is located approximately 25 miles from Augusta, GA. Numerous hunting and fishing opportunities are available. This volunteer position will provide college students with a variety of hands on experience in natural resources management. Opportunity Description: The refuge is looking for resident volunteers interested in working outdoors, working with visitors in our visitor center and just helping out the staff wherever needed. Carpentry, trail maintenance, and visitor service skills a plus but not required. Resident volunteers must provide their own RV, be willing to volunteer 24 hours/week per couple (32 hours/week for single) and volunteer for a minimum of 3 months. What the refuge provides - - A beautiful RV site located on the Bluff Unit of the refuge, equipped for water, sewer, and electric (50 amp, 220v) service - Volunteer uniforms - Training - Volunteer assignments to suit volunteers’ interests and skills What the volunteer provides – - 24 hours/week for couple; 32 hours/week for single Requirements - Volunteers must provide own RV - Be flexible and easy going - Hard working - Willing to perform duties as assigned - No skills needed. Opportunity Description: The Santee National Wildlife Visitor Center is located off of Hwy 95 (exit 102) right on the banks of Lake Marion in Clarendon County, South Carolina. The visitor center has numerous displays of local wildlife including an osprey nest with its own viewing platform!! The refuge is looking for volunteers who are interested in working at the visitor center information desk – responsibilities include answering questions about the refuge, and disseminating refuge maps, literature, and other information about natural and cultural history. Volunteers should be outgoing and be willing to work with visitors. The preference is that volunteers commit to work one day a week. The Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.

The purpose of the position is to provide a presence and assistance at designated trailhead and available camping area in the national forest. Wambaw Cycle Trail is located in a remote setting off Halfway Creek Road in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Duties Include:Understand and follow specific rules related to campground use and occupancy as well as associated trail and day use activities. Provide first hand visitor contact in a developed recreation setting. Job duties may include: routine maintenance of trash pick up on self-guided auto tour and nearby park entry areas, park grounds and facilities, daily cleaning of park facilities, assist in washing and maintaining vehicles and equipment, clears hiking trails as instructed using hand tools. Volunteer may operate motor vehicles and power equipment as qualified. Must wear provided uniform and protective equipment. Opportunity Description: Charles Pinckney National Historic Site is located in Mount Pleasant, SC. The 28 acre park is the remnant of a plantation once owned by Charles Pinckney, a major drafter and signer of the U. S. Constitution. The site interprets early United States history, the framing of the Constitution, and plantation life in 18th and early 19th centuries. Ongoing volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to: Visitor center assistants and tour guides. An excellent location for those interested in Colonial and Early American history. LODGING NOTE: There is no park housing available for volunteers. SPECIAL NOTE FOR RECREATIONAL VEHICLE APPLICANTS: This park is part of the Charleston, SC area National Park Group, that includes Fort Sumter National Monument and the Fort Moultrie Historic Site (a unit of Fort Sumter National Monument). One application to any of the three sites is sufficient, as the volunteer(s) will be considered for placement at any of the park sites in the area. The RV sites for the park group are located at the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. RV volunteers should be willing to commit up to 32 hours of service per week per person.
Opportunity Description: Nohousing provided: must be within commuting distance. Volunteers will be duty stationed at the Vistor Center and the battlefield. The volunteers will staff the information desk at the Visitor Center, assist visitors in retail sales and perform other bookstore operations. In addition, the volunteers will research, develop and present interpretive programs to the public. These programs may be guided walks, talks, and demonstrations. Programs will be on a variety of park themes. Also the volunteers will respond to visitor information requests over the telephone, through correspondence and in person. Volunteers will be asked to assist in standard opening and closing procedures. If they are residing at the picnic area, they will be responsible for picnic area litter pick-up and general maintenance. They will also be responsible for letting out late cars in the park. |
