Opportunity Description: The Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium is located on the banks of the Missouri river in southeastern South Dakota near the city of Yankton. The hatchery is situated along the Lewis and Clark Trail and lies below Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake. The lake is a 25,000 acre impoundment that is the last of the six main stem dams on the Missouri River. Below the lake is the Missouri National Recreational River which is operated by the National Park Service to maintain the river in its historical natural state. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant in the area including: boating, fishing, water skiing, beaches, kayaking, biking, golf, and hiking.
Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery is a multi-species hatchery raising cold, cool, and warm-water fish species, as well as endangered pallid sturgeon. The hatchery has seven full time employees and two seasonal employees. The hatchery is visited by nearly 100,000 visitors annually.
The Hatchery is seeking volunteers interested in performing the following duties: greeting visitors, giving tours of the hatchery and aquarium, lawn maintenance, light landscaping, minor fish culture tasks, and staffing a gift shop. Training will be provided.
Volunteers will be asked to work 20 hours per week (typically 5 hours per day, with 3 days on and 3 days off). In exchange for the hours worked, the Hatchery will provide a campsite with full RV hook ups, including cable tv, and high speed internet. A $10.00 per day living expense will be provided for each day the volunteer works. Two campsites are available. Dates of report and departure are negotiable

D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives in Spearfish, South Dakota has a very large and diverse volunteer program (over 14,000 hours donated annually). Although volunteer opportunities abound, our most popular volunteer opportunity is for visiting volunteers. Visiting volunteers are welcome from April through October (weather permitting.) In exchange for 15-24 hour/week/person, volunteers are given a premium RV site in the Spearfish City Campground (right across from the hatchery) with full hookups, cable TV, and high-speed wireless internet. Volunteers generally work a 3-days-on 3-days-off schedule with 5-6 hour shifts. Volunteers work primarily in the gift shop and giving tours of the historic Booth house (1905), museum, and restored fisheries railcar. Not all volunteers find they they enjoy working at every exhibit, and every effort is made to accommodate interests and strengths when it comes to assignments. Staffing-permitted, visiting volunteers also have the opportunity to complete office and light maintenance work (if interests and skills allow.) D.C. Booth has the ability to accommodate 10 volunteer couples throughout the volunteer season. Singles are also encourages to apply. Opportunity Description: Location Description Mount Rushmore National Memorial preserves and protects Gutzon Borglum's sculptural masterpiece, commemorating the first 150 years of our nation's history with the mountain carving of four presidents. Position Description Interpretive Volunteer or Student intern to research, develop and present interpretive talks, walks, and school programs. Will also staff information desk at the museum and information center. Housing is provided. Subsistence stipend is also provided. Opportunity Description: Volunteers needed from April 2010 – September 2010 to assist at the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center, Yankton, SD. Volunteers must be outgoing, energetic, professional and enjoy interacting with the public. This position includes greeting the public, answering question, answering telephone, taking shelter reservation, operating AV equipment in the Visitor Center theater, conduct sales using a simple computer based register, filling brochure rack and assisting Visitor Center staff with other jobs as assigned. Tour guides will become familiar with the general operation of the powerplant and lead school groups and public tours. Opportunity Description: T&E Bird Survey Assistant – Volunteers needed from May 2010 – July 2010 to assist with nest searches and surveys of threatened piping plover and endangered Interior least tern on the Missouri River between Yankton, SD and Ponca, NE. Volunteers must be outgoing, energetic, and professional. This position includes riding in a boat from sandbar to sandbar, searching for birds, nests, chicks and recording data. Spend your days working outdoors on this scenic section of the Missouri River, designated as the Missouri National Recreational River under the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. “NOTE: This position is very physically demanding. Workdays can last twelve hours (6am-6pm) and work is required in remote areas.
