Opportunity Description: T&E Bird Survey Assistant – Volunteers needed from May 2011 – July 2011 to assist with nest searches and surveys of threatened piping plover and endangered Interior least tern on the Missouri River between Yankton, SD and Ponca, NE. Volunteers must be outgoing, energetic, and professional. This position includes riding in a boat from sandbar to sandbar, searching for birds, nests, chicks and recording data. Spend your days working outdoors on this scenic section of the Missouri River, designated as the Missouri National Recreational River under the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. “NOTE: This position is very physically demanding. Workdays can last twelve hours (6am-6pm) and work is required in remote areas. A worker may walk up to six miles per day across various sandbars in hot, humid conditions. “ A campsite with water/sewer/electric hookups may be available.

Tour guides will become familiar with the general operation of the powerplant and lead school groups and public tours. This position includes greeting the public, answering question, answering telephone, taking shelter reservation, operating AV equipment in the Visitor Center theater, conduct sales using a simple computer based register, filling brochure rack and assisting Visitor Center staff with other jobs as assigned. D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives in Spearfish, South Dakota has a very large and diverse volunteer program (over 14,000 hours donated annually). Although volunteer opportunities abound, our most popular volunteer opportunity is for visiting volunteers. Visiting volunteers are welcome from April through October (weather permitting.) In exchange for 15-24 hour/week/person, volunteers are given a premium RV site in the Spearfish City Campground (right across from the hatchery) with full hookups, cable TV, and high-speed wireless internet. Volunteers generally work a 3-days-on 3-days-off schedule with 5-6 hour shifts. Volunteers work primarily in the gift shop and giving tours of the historic Booth house (1905), museum, and restored fisheries railcar. Not all volunteers find they they enjoy working at every exhibit, and every effort is made to accommodate interests and strengths when it comes to assignments. Staffing-permitted, visiting volunteers also have the opportunity to complete office and light maintenance work (if interests and skills allow.) D.C. Booth has the ability to accommodate 10 volunteer couples throughout the volunteer season. Singles are also encourages to apply. Opportunity Description: Visitor Information Assistant: As a member of the Visitor Information Staff, the volunteer serves as a Visitor Information Assistant for the Black Hills National Forest Pactola Visitor Center. The center is located on Pactola Lake, which is the largest reservoir in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The center is accessible via US Highway 385, 11 miles north of Hill City, South Dakota and is south from Lead and Deadwood, or via the Rimrock Highway, SD Highway 44 from Rapid City. The center is a popular resting place every year for thousands of visitors to the Black Hills. Many visitors stop by to take in the spectacular view during their visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial or enjoying the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. PositionDescription: Visitor Information assistants will staff the visitor center, greet visitors, answers questions, maintain administrative records and use data, and assist with special projects. Computer skills helpful. This position, although operating under the Visitor Services team, function independently. Responsible for providing written and oral (over the counter and phone) information to the public. Applicants must be in good physical condition, have dependable transportation, have good communication and organizational skills, a helpful attitude, and the ability to work well with others. Volunteers will be provided with training, uniform apparel, nametags and all needed equipment and supplies. Schedule: Each Volunteer is needed Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend (flexible) and are asked to provide 32 hours of volunteer service per week. Volunteers will be provided a free RV campsite with electricity, water and holding tank. Regularly scheduled days off. Three-month minimum commitment is preferred.

Position Description Interpretive Volunteer or Student intern to research, develop and present interpretive talks, walks, and school programs. Will also staff information desk at the museum and information center. Housing is provided. Subsistence stipend is also provided.
