Opportunity Description: Two volunteer couples that enjoy working with people are needed May 1, 2011 through-September 30, 2011 to serve as Park Hosts at the Right Bank Recreation Area. Duties include greeting our day-use visitors, collecting fees and providing information from an entrance booth with a view of the lake. The recreation area is located next to the lock and dam and includes a swim beach, picnic shelters, picnic tables, restrooms, playgrounds, volleyball court, and boat ramps. Interpretive opportunities will be available but not required. Volunteers will be asked to work three days a week, 8 to 10 hours total per day. Opportunity Description: Park Host- Day Use Park Host Volunteers are needed at Hurricane Bridge Recreation Area located at Center Hill Lake.
Volunteers are needed from May 1, 2011 to September 1, 2011. Primary duties will include collection of use fees for boat launching at a busy recreation area, assist users of the Day Use Park by providing information on the area, the lake and policies including recreation use fee policies and procedures. Brochures, map, and other supplies will be provided by the Resource Manager. The volunteer will be expected to maintain and stock Honor Vault supplies, i.e. Day Use Fee Self Pay Envelopes and Permits, perform inspection of recreation area facilities and report items that need repair, operate the Entrance Station during schedule below. This will involve the sale of Day Use (Boat Launching) Permits, and Annual Day Use Passes. A full hook-up campsite will be provided. Volunteer must promote a positive image of the US Army Corps of Engineers and actively promotes safety. Opportunity Description: Park Attendant needed now at the following area: Cook Time period available for the volunteer position: present to March 30, 2011 Job Duties: 1. Become familiar with all the rules and regulations. Supply the public with information and regulations concerning the Corps of Engineers lake project. 2. Walk or drive through your assigned area daily. Make checks of comfort stations, bulletin boards, and facilities and report any problems. These positions are with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District, Old Hickory Lake. The volunteer is assigned duties which supplement the efforts of the Corps of Engineers. Major Duties: 1. Become familiar with all rules and regulations. 2. Report maintenance items to the volunteer coordinator. Examples: broken lights, water leaking from the hydrant, etc. 3. Greet visitors at the entrance and assist them in filling out fee envelopes, which are then deposited in an honor vault. 4. Report all significant incidents occurring in the park, such as law enforcement problems, violation of regulations, criticism of facilities, etc. to the volunteer coordinator. 5. Conduct work in a safe manner, emphasizing prevention of accidents and identification of unsafe conditions. 6. Inspect the day use area daily, when working to insure that litter and garbage at each picnic site is properly disposed of, comfort stations are clean and operational, vehicles are parked correctly, playground equipment is safe and operating properly, swimming areas are free from hazards, all pets are leashed, etc. (The area is cleaned by the contractors) 7. Ensure that an adequate supply of day use envelopes and pencils are present when not on duty. 8. Attendants shall secure and lock the registration center when it is left unattended. 9. Maintain a neat and clean personal appearance at all times. Wear proper volunteer identification supplied by the Corps. 10. All campground maintenance (mowing, electrical or plumbing, cleaning, etc.) is conducted by the Old Hickory Lake Shop staff or Graham Services (contractor) unless notified by the volunteer coordinator. 11. The day use registration center shall be open and staffed according to the following schedule. Opportunity Description: Description of Duties: Must possess a valid State driver’s license in order to drive a government vehicle to accomplish visitor assistance duties. Works in an extremely mature and professional manner in order to create a safe working environment for NON-law enforcement based volunteer activities. Qualifications:
Must possess a valid State operator license. Must be a mature adult couple who enjoys talking and interacting with the public. Retired law enforcement background is preferable for better recognition of hazards that should be avoided and passed along to field rangers. The incumbent should possess the ability to get along with a variety of people and take directions and feedback from a number of law enforcement personnel. This is NOT an enforcement position.
Opportunity Description: Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center Visitor Services Volunteer
Position Description: A Visitor Services Volunteer assists with staffing of the main information desk at the Lookout Mountain Battlefield. The information desk serves as the park’s main point of contact with visitors. Duties of the Visitor Services volunteer include greeting visitors and providing information about park programs, exhibits, and entrance into Point Park. VIPs will assist with fee collection and sales in the visitor center’s bookstore. Volunteer will also assist with answering incoming calls.
If interested, the Visitor Services Volunteer may advance to presenting interpretive programs with adequate experience and training.
Requirements: Minimum of ninety-six hours per year which averages two four-hour shifts per month. Weekly or bi-weekly commitment of one four to six hour shift is preferred. Volunteers are required to wear a uniform shirt and name badge, which will be provided, while on duty. As representative of the National Park Service, volunteers must act in a courteous and professional manor. Minimum age for position is eighteen.
Requirement for use of RV pad: Volunteers wishing to use the park's RV pad (30 & 50 amp, water, sewer, electricity provided) must commit to a minimum of two months and 32 hours per week. RV pad is located within the Chickamauga Battlefield – 12 miles from the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center.
Skills: Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Basic knowledge of local area is required. Interest in learning about the park’s resources, programs, trails, and regulations is essential as sharing this information is the top priority of the position.
Goal: In support of the mission of the National Park Service in conjunction with the specific mission of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the fundamental objectives of the work performed are: • Visitor Services – orienting visitors to the park, the visitor center, programs, exhibits, tours, and facilities. • Education - educating and informing visitors about the historical significance of the park and about the policies, laws, rules and regulations relating to the protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources and to the operations of the park.
Supervision: Visitor Services volunteers report to assigned personnel within the park’s Ranger Division.
Benefits and Responsibilities: Volunteer Agreements: All VIPs are required to sign a volunteer agreement form (Form OMB 0596-0080). Through the agreement, VIPs’ benefit from being treated as federal employmees for the purposes of compensation for work-related injuries and immunity from liability pursuant to the Federal Tort Claims Act.
Opportunity Description: The Cumberland Trail project is part of a phased trail system and is being constructed one segment at a time. Volunteers will work on the New River Segment. Once completed, this 38 mile segment will connect Cove Lake State Park at its northern end with Frozen Head State Park to the south. To date 28 miles of this segment have been completed. The goal for the 2010 AHS Volunteer Vacations is to construct the remaining trail to complete this segment. In this mountainous area, some elevation change will occur, up to a 700 foot climb on the hike into the worksite. Work will consist of tread construction using hand tools.
