Opportunity Description: Butterfly Garden Volunteer(s)-Volunteer Work Period-Early May – Mid October Job Description: Volunteer(s) will be responsible for maintaining a brand new interpretive butterfly garden at the Walton Ferry Environmental Study Area at Old Hickory Lake. Duties will include weeding, thinning, deadheading, mulching, watering, and planting, plants as need. Plants and some equipment are provided by the Corps of Engineers. This position requires only a few, flexible hours per week, but will be discussed with the Butterfly Garden Coordinator prior to the beginning of work. Opportunity Description: Park Host - Volunteer couple needed to serve as Gate Attendant/Park Hosts at Wartrace Day Use Area on beautiful Cordell Hull Lake, in Gainesboro, TN. Duties involve collecting day use fees at the park entrance station. The Volunteer Gate Attendant/Park Host minimum time requirement is twenty (20) hours per week with special emphasis being placed on weekend duty. Critical work days are Friday through Sunday. Volunteer Hosts shall be provided a free camping site with full electric, water, and sewer hookups. Local phone service is available. Opportunity Description: Two volunteer couples that enjoy working with people are needed May 1, 2010 through-September 30, 2010 to serve as Park Hosts at the Right Bank Recreation Area. Duties include greeting our day-use visitors, collecting fees and providing information from an entrance booth with a view of the lake. The recreation area is located next to the lock and dam and includes a swim beach, picnic shelters, picnic tables, restrooms, playgrounds, volleyball court, and boat ramps. Interpretive opportunities will be available but not required. Volunteers will be asked to work three days a week, 8 to 10 hours total per day. In turn, our volunteers will be provided a free campsite with water and electric hookups in Lock A Campground, which is a short walk or drive from the entrance booth. Opportunity Description: Park Host- Day Use Park Host Volunteers are needed at Hurricane Bridge Recreation Area located at Center Hill Lake.
Volunteers are needed from May 1, 2010 to September 1, 2010. Primary duties will include collection of use fees for boat launching at a busy recreation area, assist users of the Day Use Park by providing information on the area, the lake and policies including recreation use fee policies and procedures. Brochures, map, and other supplies will be provided by the Resource Manager. The volunteer will be expected to maintain and stock Honor Vault supplies, i.e. Day Use Fee Self Pay Envelopes and Permits, perform inspection of recreation area facilities and report items that need repair, operate the Entrance Station during schedule below. This will involve the sale of Day Use (Boat Launching) Permits, and Annual Day Use Passes. A full hook-up campsite will be provided. Volunteer must promote a positive image of the US Army Corps of Engineers and actively promotes safety. Opportunity Description: Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center Visitor Services Volunteer
Position Description: A Visitor Services Volunteer assists with staffing of the main information desk at the Lookout Mountain Battlefield. The information desk serves as the park’s main point of contact with visitors. Duties of the Visitor Services volunteer include greeting visitors and providing information about park programs, exhibits, and entrance into Point Park. VIPs will assist with fee collection and sales in the visitor center’s bookstore. Volunteer will also assist with answering incoming calls.
If interested, the Visitor Services Volunteer may advance to presenting interpretive programs with adequate experience and training.
Requirements: Minimum of ninety-six hours per year which averages two four-hour shifts per month. Weekly or bi-weekly commitment of one four to six hour shift is preferred. Volunteers are required to wear a uniform shirt and name badge, which will be provided, while on duty. As representative of the National Park Service, volunteers must act in a courteous and professional manor. Minimum age for position is eighteen.
Requirement for use of RV pad: Volunteers wishing to use the park's RV pad (30 & 50 amp, water, sewer, electricity provided) must commit to a minimum of two months and 32 hours per week. RV pad is located within the Chickamauga Battlefield – 12 miles from the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center.
Skills: Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Basic knowledge of local area is required. Interest in learning about the park’s resources, programs, trails, and regulations is essential as sharing this information is the top priority of the position.
Goal: In support of the mission of the National Park Service in conjunction with the specific mission of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the fundamental objectives of the work performed are: • Visitor Services – orienting visitors to the park, the visitor center, programs, exhibits, tours, and facilities. • Education - educating and informing visitors about the historical significance of the park and about the policies, laws, rules and regulations relating to the protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources and to the operations of the park.
