Roving interpretation of the site and staffing discovery carts on the exterior grounds. Other duties may involve staffing the Visitor Center information desk and cash register book sales. Activities include hiking, backpacking, rafting, canoeing, birding, wildlife viewing, and camping. Park elevations range from 1,850' at Rio Grande Village to 7,825' at Emory Peak. Duties: 32 hours a week: operate visitor information desk, answer questions, write backcountry permits, operate a cash register, open and close visitor center independently, clean restrooms. 8 hours a week: work on special projects. Skills needed: Desire to work with people is necessary. Ability to communicate in a friendly, patient and helpful manner is essential. Experience working with a cash register is helpful. RV site with full hook-ups, propane and uniforms provided. Persimmon Gap is a remote location at the main entrance to Big Bend National Park, 27 miles away from Park Headquarters at Panther Junction. At Persimmon Gap there is a visitor center, entrance station and a trailer pad. Within the park are the following amenities: post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge. Marathon is 40 miles away and has limited shopping, a clinic, churches, restaurants, and lodging. Opportunity Description: Make your next home The Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is an 8,500 acre area located in the North East Texas corner of Texas. It was established for the management, conservation and protection of migratory birds, fish and other wildlife. As a Resident Volunteer, you will be surrounded by the tranquil and scenic beauty of Caddo Lake, its wetlands and ancient Bald Cypress trees draped in Spanish Moss. You’ll see pine and hardwood forests, deer, dozens of varieties of neo-tropical migratory birds and watch as trophy size bass splash out of the water. Enjoy viewing brilliantly colored fall foliage and experiencing mild winters. The Refuge is conveniently located to shopping and entertainment centers. As a Resident Volunteer/s for Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, you will assist the permanent refuge staff in the operation of newly opened, non-staffed visitor centers, and in other duties as required, including independently opening and closing refuge gates. In exchange for your 32 hour per week two month commitment, the refuge will provide an RV site with full hook-ups, two sites are available next to the visitor center, and laundry facilities. There are opportunities to work both inside and outside. Help is needed year round. Training provided.
Opportunity Description: Twin Bridges Park in conjunction with Texas Trash-off and the Baylor University Paintathon. - We will again start are annual Lake Shore Cleanup at Twin Bridges Park on the 1st Saturday in April (April 3, 2010) starting at 9am, until 3pm. Drinks and snacks will be available, courtesy of our partner organization Keep Waco Beautiful. Opportunity Description: Park Host Maintenance/Light Construction: Volunteer positions are available. We are looking for couples or individuals willing to assist us in park improvements and general maintenance of our facilities. It is helpful to have experience in plumbing, carpentry, electric, heavy equipment operation, chainsaws etc. Maintenance volunteers may also install or repair signs, boundary fences, trails, or other projects as needed. Our maintenance volunteers work under the direct supervision and hand in hand with our maintenance personnel. Opportunity Description: Park Host Ambassadors - We are currently accepting applications for positions beginning October 2009- April 2010, Interviews to be held in late June and early July 09 for Park Host Ambassadors – Volunteers are needed year round to answer questions, help campers get settled, suggest things to do and places to go in the vicinity, and explain the campground regulations. They keep the campground neat, clean, and attend to some minor repairs or maintenance as needed. Ambassadors are responsible for mowing camp site areas and around restroom and group areas. As an ambassador you will represent the Corps to our visitors and need to have a positive friendly attitude and a willingness to work with the public.
