Opportunity Description: Natural Bridges National Monument is looking for volunteers to help the park staff with visitor center and interpretation duties during the Fall season. Natural Bridges National Monument is located in southeastern Utah and is home to three natural land bridges. Considered remote, Natural Bridges is 35 miles west from the small towns of Blanding, Utah and 55 miles from Monticello, Utah where basic shopping and medical services are available. Cortez, Colorado (121 miles), Durango, Colorado (166 miles) to the east and Farmington, NM (169 miles) to the South offer more services, including a variety of shopping venues, restaurants, airports and hospitals. Natural Bridges is less than a day’s drive to other National Park and recreation areas like the Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, Lake Powell, Four Corners and Monument Valley. These areas offer many diverse recreational opportunities that include biking, hiking, climbing, four wheeling and river rafting. Volunteer duties include a full range of interpretive programs and activities, including developing and presenting interpretive programs to the visiting public in a variety of formats: evening programs, astronomy talks, guided walks to the bridges, patio talks and overlook talks, roving interpretation at park trails and the 9 mile loop road, assisting Canyonlands Natural History Association with sales and inventory of merchandise, assisting with education outreach programs, assisting park staff with projects and emergency situations and staffing the visitor center information desk (park orientation, answering general questions, trip planning). Temperatures during the fall average between 65-80 degrees for highs and 30-40 degrees for lows. Housing with utilities are available. Volunteer may have to share housing with two other people. A background check will be required for the person selected. Effective October 1st, 2010, a meal reimbursement of $15.00/day will be available for volunteers. Opportunity Description: The BLM St. George Field Office is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and responsible campground host to oversee the beautiful and popular Red Cliffs Campground in stunning southern Utah. This is a year-round position and a daily stipend is provided. The successful applicant will have their own recreational vehicle and couples are welcome. There is no power in the campground, but electricity is provided to the campground host via a solar panel array with a generator backup. The campground is located just off Interstate 15, 14 miles northeast of St. George, Utah, and 35 miles south of Cedar City, Utah. It is nestled in a shaded nook of riparian vegetation just minutes from the freeway. Directly adjacent to, and accessible from the campground, are a series of trails and interpreted archaeological and paleontological sites. The campground is within the newly designated Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, which has been set aside to protect the endangered desert tortoise. Due north of the campground are the steep and beautiful red rocks of the Cottonwood Wilderness Area. Opportunity Description: NATURE CENTER POSITION DESCRIPTION: -Staff the nature center from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, five days per week -Maintain interpretive exhibits and facility cleanliness -Conduct established activities or develop and implement an educational activities program for the center (research, prepare, advertise, present and evaluate new or established activities) with guidance. -Provide general information on park and area facilities and services -Attend a variety of ranger presentations for an overview of the National Park Service interpretive programming -Opportunity to observe work in other agency divisions if desired. -Meet regularly with NPS supervisor -Operate equipment including hand-held radio, VCR, computer, copier, passenger vehicle or van -Complete monthly statistics reports -Make recommendations for future changes DURATION: A commitment of 32 to 40 hours per week for the period of mid August through Labor Day weekend 2011. Applicants are recruited continuously. PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The park provides one private bedroom in a coed multi-bedroom house with shared living, kitchen and bathroom facilities. Volunteers are required to wear a uniform shirt provided by the park. This two-room 940-square foot structure is located in the park’s historic district, approximately ¾ mile from the visitor center on the Scenic Drive. It is conveniently located between two fruit orchards, across from a blacksmith shop exhibit, adjacent to Sulphur Creek, and near a picnic area and historic pioneer farmstead. The building is set back from the road and surrounded by areas of rough lawn with mature shade trees. The Ripple Rock Nature Center opened in May of 1999 and is visited by approximately 3500 people during the summer season. THE PARK: Capitol Reef National Park is located in south-central Utah. The Ripple Rock Nature Center, residence area, Fruita Historic District, and park headquarters are 11 miles east of Torrey along Highway 24. Basic groceries, gas, and restaurants are available in Torrey. Dental and medical services are in Bicknell, 20 miles west of park headquarters. Opportunity Description: Located at 6800 ft. elevation. 8 tent sites on the southern border of the Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness. Non motorized trailheads for Oak Grove trail, which intersects the Summit Trail near Signal Mountain. Fishing in Leeds Creek. Location: From St. George go about 18 miles north on I-15 to Leeds. Exit and take Forest Road 032 north about 8.5 miles. The Camp Hosts perform the following duties in the Campground:
• Use Good Host methods and assist campers with the check in process and answer any questions in regards to fees and campground protocols. • Alert campers to any restrictions that are in effect – such as Fire Restrictions, OHV restrictions etc... • Provide information about the Pine Valley Wilderness area and district opportunities. • Make sure the campground registration area is in good condition, with accurate information, and that there are plenty of fee available. • Provide custodial maintenance such as: Clean fire pits • Clean and stock the bathrooms • Notify maintenance of any maintenance problems such as water leaks in bathroom, toilet or sink problems, and water leaks within the campground. • Pick up litter along the roadside. • Gather trash from trash cans Reimbursement consists of a daily stipend, camper or small RV site with propane. All supplies and tools for maintenance will be provided.
Opportunity Description: Seasonal Campground Hosts Cedar Breaks National Monumant is in magnificant southern Utah. At 10,500 feet, the days are perfect and the night s are cool. Our campground hosts are special and part of our small family of Rangers and maintenance crew. The Camp Hosts perform the following duties in the Campground: • Oversee the 28 camp sites. • Introduce themselves to new campers, assist them with the check-in process and answer any questions in regards to fees and campground protocols. • Alert campers to any restrictions that are in effect – such as Red Flag Warnings. • Provide information on Cedar Breaks National Monument, the facilities, and programs. • Make sure the campground registration area is in good condition, with accurate information, and that there are plenty of fee envelopes and credit card slips available. • Make sure the campground and picnic areas in good working condition. Report any problems to maintenance. • Clean fire pits - take fire debris to the bone yard. • Clean and stock the bathrooms (one in campground and one at Visitor’s Center) at least once a day. • Notify maintenance of any maintenance problems such as water leaks in bathroom, toilet or sink problems, and water leaks within the campground. • Complete site survey twice daily – morning and evening. • Reserve campsites for various volunteer groups by posting “Site Occupied” signs on the camp posts as directed by park personnel. Campground hosts also have duties outside the campground. These duties include but are not limited to: • Cleaning and stocking Visitor Center bathroom at least once a day. • Pick up litter along the roadside. • Gather trash from trash cans along the park rim and Visitor Center. • Gather recycle from along the rim and Visitor Center. Put in recycle bins. • Restock pre-cut firewood at the Visitors Center. • Hike the trails once a week looking for trash, missing signs, and any resource protection issues that park staff should know about. Hikes should take place during the week so that they don’t overlap the guided hikes given on the weekends. • Staff the information desk in the Visitors Center as needed and agreed upon by Hosts and Lead Ranger. • Distribute newsletters and promotional materials to various towns. • Assist with traffic control during special events, accidents, and emergencies. • Check with maintenance to see if they need help with various projects. • Lead interpretation programs, as agreed upon by host and Lead Park Ranger. NOTE: Duty accommodations will be made for individual needs and preferences. Reimbursment consists of a daily stipend, RV site with propane, phone and internet. Hot showers in campground.
Opportunity Description: Campground Host: Volunteer would do light maintenance and cleanup as well as personal contact with the public to promote responsible camping. Free campground unit. Opportunity Description: Visitor Center Attendant: Volunteers assist with staffing the Forest information center at Fish Lake. Volunteers provide information on fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, scenic drives, etc. In addition, volunteers sell Interpretive Association materials and help monitor public programs held on weekends. Good communication skills are essential. Knowledge about the area is helpful, but not required. Camp site for trailer/RV with hookups to water, power, and sewer or lodging provided at Forest Service Administrative Site - CCC cabin equipped with electrical heat, stove, fridge, water, sewer, laundry facilities, and phone access.

Opportunity Description: VISITOR CENTER ASSISTANT
WORK TO INCLUDE: Being actively and enthusiastically involved in our frequent interpretive programs at the Strawberry Bay Amphitheater using many individuals and agencies for a myriad of subject matter for entertainment and education of our Forest visitors. Light custodial duties including, but not limited to, the following: vacuuming, removing and replacing trash liners, washing windows, re-stocking of supplies and physical cleaning maintenance of public restrooms, replacing light bulbs, dusting, etc. etc. Inventory and ordering of bookstore materials. This work is mainly cash register use and completion of deposit forms directly related to the sales of bookstore items at the Visitor's Center weekly. Boardwalk maintenance: The Visitor's Center interpretive program utilizes a boardwalk system which comprises of about 1500 of boardwalk trail in riparian zones immediately adjacent to the V.C. The boardwalk system will need from time-to-time, incidental clean-up, repairs, and maintenance. One such duty may include treating the boardwalk with linseed, for example. Landscaping: The arena of landscaping in Strawberry is fairly mundane, because of the altitude and temperature, the grass needs to be mowed only about twice a month with a ride-on-mower and use of a weed trimmer around concrete edges such as sidewalks and curbs.
