Opportunity Description: Park: Prince William Forest Park is a 15,000+ acre park preserving a variety of natural and cultural history within 32 miles of Washington, D.C. The park has 37 miles of hiking trails, over 21 miles of bicycle accessible roads and trails, numerous campgrounds and numerous cultural opportunities varying from CCC cabins to the OSS. Dates: December, 2009 - ? - this position requires the host live in camp quarters. Duties: The host position assists groups during their encampment by answering questions, managing check-in and check-out and providing assistance as needed. This position is an on-site job. Skills: Organizational, people friendly attitude, willingness to work in a rural, rustic outdoor environment. Compensation: Host positions vary from those who would like to bring their RV/trailer to those who would like to stay in the comfortable staff type quarters adjacent to the camp (no charge for either RV/trailer hookup or quarters). These positions are a great opportunity within reach of the great outdoors and near Washington D.C. Also, Prince William Forest Park is within reach of the area of many historic and natural attractions. The park requests that host positions volunteer at least 32 hours per week in exchange for housing. Area: The area has many other national parks varying from George Washington's birthplace to the Civil War sites of Manassas, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania.
Opportunity Description: Volunteer Internships - Environmental Education & Interpretation ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS: If you enjoy working with people, love the outdoors, and want to spend your summer at beautiful Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you! Number of Positions: Three volunteer internships available- dates flexible May – August 2010 Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA. The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities. The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth and church groups. The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public. Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger. Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs. Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs. All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40. Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages. A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field. Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license. Little Stony Creek is a native trout stream and the Cascades National Recreation Trail ascends the gorge for 2 miles to the picturesque 66-foot Cascades waterfall. Duties include providing information to the public, minor cleanup of picnic area and bathrooms, monitor trail conditions, and reporting maintenance problems to the district. Work 4 days per week, including most holidays and weekends. One month minimum commitment required. Full Hookups, phone, and propane refills. Opportunity Description: The Appalachian Trail invites you to bring your group to help protect the natural and cultural resources along the Trail. Stop the advance of invasive exotic plants. Your work will make a big difference in protecting the environment. You may contact the Volunteer Leader to set up a time that fits your group schedule. Opportunity Description: Horse Enthusiasts, this is for you. Host needed for the new White Cedar Horse Camp located in the beautiful Walker Creek Valley area of Bland Co., VA. This is a rare opportunity to be a host and bring your horse that you rode in on. With over 50 miles of horse trails and Forest Service roads to traverse, White Cedar Horse Camp is an ideal place to spend your summer. Nearby communities include Wytheville, Bland, Dublin and Pearisburg. A small country store is only minutes from the camp. Duties include minor site/trash cleanup, visitor information, cleaning the toilets, and general trail condition surveys. No electric or phone available at this time. Nearest cell/phone coverage is 4 miles away. Two Restrooms (pit toilets) are provided on site for the campers. Propane/generator refills, horse stall, water, and on site septic tank is provided. Must be on site Friday mornings to Monday afternoons. Work most weekends. Additional duties may include cleaning two nearby SST's (Walnut Flats C.G. & Flat Top Day Use Horse Area), depending on use.
