Opportunity Description: We encourage volunteers 13 years old and older to help at the International Children’s Festival 2010. Volunteers work to keep the park clean and pristine as it fills with thousands of visitors. While helping out, volunteers are given the opportunity to visit the international exhibits at the festival and learn about other cultures. Volunteering at International Children’s Festival can help high school students reach their required community service hours. It is also an excellent way to earn Federal hours for scouting. Upon request, the park can provide documentation of the number of hours volunteered. The International Children’s Festival is held September 18 and 19, 10 am-4 pm. Volunteers can sign up to work shifts, such as 10 am-1 pm or 1-4 pm. Scouts may work 5 hour shifts to earn a NPS Resource Stewardship Scout Ranger Certificate. Anyone under 18 years of age, must be accompanied by an adult.

Opportunity Description: Volunteer Internships - Environmental Education & Interpretation ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS: If you enjoy working with people, love the outdoors, and want to spend your summer at beautiful Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you! Number of Positions: Three volunteer internships available- dates flexible May – August 2011 Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA. The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities. The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth and church groups. The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public. Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger. Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs. Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs. All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40. Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages. A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field. Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license. Opportunity Description: Provide information to visitors on things to do and see in the park and surrounding areas, assist in registering campers, and helping visitors find campsites. Hosts may perform minor restroom maintenance (Restocking paper products and soap and light sweeping) and report all other maintenance problems to the Campground Supervisor. The hosts will gather use information and keep the supervisor informed of any problems in the campground. If the host observes what is or may be an illegal activity, the host will share that information with the supervisor or law enforcement staff. Other duties may be assigned as mutually agreed upon. Host positions may be assigned between four campgrounds within the park. The campgrounds are about 3,500 feet above sea level, at or near the top of a mountain. Spring and fall can bring cold, windy weather, humidity, fog, rain, and occasional snow. Summers can be hot and electrical storms are common. Power outages may occur frequently. A variety of animals and insects such as skunks, gnats, deer, bear, and rattlesnakes are native. Laundry, minimal groceries and pay phones are available at concession facilities. The closest grocery or drug stores are about 20 miles away from the park. We are looking for volunteers who like to talk, meet, and communicate with a variety of people. A good attitude. Ability to listen. Ability to relay information. Skill in handling money and operating electronic cash register. Valid drivers license. In return for your volunteer work, you will be given a camping site with free water, electric, and sewer hookups. You will need to provide a recreation vehicle. Volunteer uniforms will be issued. A government vehicle may be available. A portable radio and training on radio operations will be provided. Host will be under a surety bond and may be trained in the sale of permits and the collection of fees. Hosts will work a minimum of 30 hours per week, which includes weekend days. Hosts will have two consecutive weekdays off. Shifts will vary depending upon campground needs.
Opportunity Description: Park: Prince William Forest Park is a 15,000+ acre park preserving a variety of natural and cultural history within 32 miles of Washington, D.C. The park has 37 miles of hiking trails, over 21 miles of bicycle accessible roads and trails, numerous campgrounds and numerous cultural opportunities varying from CCC cabins to the OSS. PLEASE NOTE: Trail maintenance activities are now performed by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club through an agreement with the park. The availability of volunteer opportunities on trails will be coordinated and determined based on the current labor needs of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. You can access their schedules on http://www.patc.net Dates: Year-round. Duties: Volunteers can use hand tools (shovels, pulaskis, pruning shears, etc.) in repairing erosion controls, delineating trails, eliminating short-cut trails, constructing/repairing boardwalk, removal of vegetation covering the trail, inspecting/repairing trail signs and litter pick-up. Also, there is a need for general trail patrol and inspection. Skills: Volunteers must be able to use common hand tools, be able to communicate with visitors and co-workers, be able to hike over rough terrain in inclement weather and in remote locations. Must like working in the outdoors and be prepared for outdoor critters, such as ticks, spiders, snakes, etc. Compensation: This volunteer position provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience within a professional work environment located within a national park. In addition. Also, the position provides the satisfaction of helping preserve and maintain a national park.
