Opportunity Description: Supervisors will begin reviewing applications in January 2010 for 2010 summer season. Volunteer would provide visitor information and services at one of the park’s visitor centers. Duties may include: operating an information desk; answering visitor questions; taking campground reservations and issuing camping and diving permits; opening and closing the building; operating AV equipment; providing park program and safety information; conducting over-the-counter sales; maintaining visitation records; designing and updating bulletin boards; accompanying cruise service tours; giving interpretive talks or conducting tours, and on occasion, assisting with basic custodial duties. Parkwide orientation and training would be provided. Couples applying for this position at Little Sand Bay mainland location may split with a maintenance position (one partner doing maintenance, and other partner working as interpretive guide.) RV sites and/or shared dormitory accommodations available. Minimum of 3 week commitment, and 8 hour work days.

Duties may include: presenting interpretive talks, walks, or conducting tours of natural and/or historic sites such as the Lakeshore Trail, Manitou Fish Camp, or Hokenson Brothers Fishery; accompanying Apostle Islands Cruise Service cruises to assist with tours at island locations; conducting environmental education programs for school groups; or presenting slide programs for school groups or other organizations. Parkwide training and orientation would be provided. Couples applying for this position at Little Sand Bay mainland location may split with a maintenance position (one partner doing maintenance, and other partner working as interpretive guide.) For that location, RV sites and/or shared dormitory accommodations are available. Other duty stations are on islands. These stations may not have running water. Sanitary facilities may consist of an outhouse. A propane heater, a gas-powered refrigerator, and a gas stove for cooking may be available. Volunteers should keep their schedules flexible and always bring extra supplies, in case of weather related transportation delays. Self sufficiency is a must. Minimum of 3 week commitment and 8 hour work days.
Opportunity Description: Campground Host: If you like to camp, enjoy people and have extra time during the summer, consider volunteering at one of the National Forest campgrounds in northern Wisconsin. Temperatures typically range from the 60s to 80s in the day and can drop to the 40s at night. Hosts will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions and reporting vandalism or other issues to Forest Service personnel. Typical Duties Include: Minor maintenance and inspection of the campground including picking up litter, cleaning toilets, raking sites and cleaning fire rings and picinic tables as needed. Tools and supplies for work accomplishment will be provided. A host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You will be expected to be on-site five days each week, especially weekends and during holidays. Hosts will be provided free use of a campsite. Opportunity Description: Volunteer Campground Host: Site located in Highland Ridge Campground, Spring Valley, WI 2010- May, August, September Start/End Dates: Volunteer campground hosts are scheduled on a month by month basis, although corresponding months can be grouped together if applicable (e.g. August/Sept). Main duties consist of: informing the public on rules and regulations, answering visitor questions, posting reservations and selling firewood and ice. We don't have an official number of hours worked per week, but expect hosts to be on-site everyday for at least (4) hrs, unless advanced oral permission is obtained from Lead Ranger. Opportunity Description: Park Maintenance- Blackhawk Park is looking for a long term (2-5 months) park maintenance volunteer(s) to perform light duty maintenance in the park from May – September 2010. We are looking for energetic applicants that would like to work in a campground setting located on the Mississippi River main channel 30 miles south of La Crosse, WI. Work can include painting, minor repairs and assisting other maintenance staff. We require volunteers to work 24-30 hours per week per person in exchange for a site with FHU including 20/30/50 amp service. No weekend work and a stipend may be available depending on budget. Opportunity Description: Assist refuge with photo collection. Volunteer will organize digital photos, scan slides and old 35mm photos and catalog all photos into categories. Use of scanner and photo organization software will be necessary. Knowledge and ability to use a variety of computer software and photo cataloging skills would be recommended. Opportunity Description: Volunteers needed to assist with control of invasive species on Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge. Biological, chemical, and mechanical means of control are used to control invasives in the prairie, forest, and wetlands. Volunteers will help collect various beetles for control of leafy spurge and purple loosestrife, pull European buckthorn using hand tools, and cut black locust, buckthorn, and Siberian elm using hand or power tools. Fish and Wildlife Service will provide beetle collection materials and personal protective equipment and tools needed for cutting. Depending on the volunteer's background and skill level, the Service may provide training for pesticide certification to apply certain non-restricted herbicides. Work will be outdoors in temperatures ranging from hot in the summer to cold in the winter. Mosquitoes and deer flies are bothersome in the summer. Deer ticks are present off and on when it is warm. A minimum of 8 hours per month required. No housing is available on site. Applicants need to find their own and please note you are willing to do so or you application may not be accepted.
Opportunity Description: Volunteer needed to inventory and monitor purple loosestrife in Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge. Duties include inventorying stands of purple loosestrife using a palm pilot type of computer and monitoring sites where loosestrife-eating beetles have been released. Fish and Wildlife Service will provide the palm pilot device and training in its use and a canoe or kayak to use for inventorying and monitoring. The volunteer must be proficient in using a canoe or kayak and be available in May, July, and September for approximately 30 hours each month. Work will be outdoors in temperatures ranging from hot in the summer to cool in the spring and fall. Mosquitoes and deer flies are bothersome in the summer.
