Opportunity Description: Park Host- Volunteer Couple wanted to provide visitor assistance at Holy Ground Battlefield Park, on weekends and holidays from April to September (Labor Day). Responsibilities would include greeting visitors; making routine patrols in the park; checking for minor violations; reporting maintenance problems; explaining the day use fee to boaters and swimmers, securing the park at closing. A Contract Park Attendant position is also available at this park. A campsite with power, water and sewage will be provided. A camper trailer or motor home is required for the position. Winter season runs from the 1st of October to the 1 of March. Park Host positions are available at 5 campgrounds and 3 day-use areas. Host duties vary depending on the season. The main function of a Park Host is to provide services of hospitality to park guests. Opportunity Description: Visitor Service Volunteer - Interpretive Center Desk Position is located in the Lowndes County Interpretive Center in Lowndes County, AL. Volunteers assigned to this position staff the visitor center and complete additional tasks and projects in accordance with park needs. Tour of Duty Volunteers are needed to staff the visitor center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. This “window of operation” is divided into two four-hour time slots: morning (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and afternoon (12 to 4 p.m.). Volunteers may fill either or both slots on a given day, depending on interest and need. Commitment Volunteers are expected to make an initial commitment of six months. In addition to the time spent in staffing the visitor center desk, they are strongly encouraged to attend trainings, meetings and other activities sponsored by the National Park Service, and to keep abreast of news and events impacting the Presidio. Uniform The volunteer will be expected to wear a uniform and nametag identifying them as a volunteer of the National Park Service. The National Park Service will provide all uniform items. Major Duties Primary among the duties of volunteers staffing the visitor center are the following: * Interact with the public. Greet walk-in visitors, answer any questions, provide directions and refer to other sources of information as needed. Answer telephones and provide information or refer to appropriate source. * Maintain Eastern National sales outlet. Conduct sales transactions using the cash register, keep shelves stocked and overall visitor center appearance neat and clean. * Take program reservations. Maintain reservation lists for all advertised programs, informing participants of time, location and any special details. * Communicate. Alert NPS staff to concerns involving the public or other employees, park facilities, store operations, programs, etc. Refer issues through appropriate NPS channels when they exceed the volunteer’s scope of responsibility or possess the potential for controversy or embarrassment. Volunteers should reflect a high degree of professionalism while representing the National Park Service. They should be neat, courteous, respectful of others and dependable.

RV couple needed to meet and greet the public at the Visitor Center; provide information, and operate the small bookstore. Approx. 24 hours per week (weekends). Opportunity Description: The Talladega National Forest-Oakmulgee District is seeking a Campground Host for Payne Lake Recreation Area. We are seeking individuals or couples who possess good customer skills, are capable of general maintenance, and are able to organize and plan work. We will provide electric, sewage, propane, water, internet access, and laundry facilities. In return, we ask for a minimum of 20 hours per week of volunteer service per person. Volunteer assignments range from gate attendant, light maintenance, light janitorial, and visitor contacts. We ask for a commitment of no less than six months and if selected we will work with you to match your skills and interests to the tasks we need completed. THE OAKMULGEE AND PAYNE LAKE Located where the upper coastal plain gives rise to the Appalachian foothills, the lands of the Oakmulgee District of the Talladega National Forest are a rich mosaic of forest types and habitats. Steep ridges to rolling hills fading to hardwood bottoms make up the diversity of forest conditions found on the Oakmulgee. Far from city lights visitors can star gaze on a remote vista. While known for its longleaf forests, over 40% of the Oakmulgee is covered with a mixture of hardwoods and wetlands affording all who venture into the forest an array of opportunities. Payne Lake Recreation Area is the cornerstone of recreation on the Oakmulgee. Located midway between Greensboro and Brent on Alabama Highway 25, Payne Lake provides a great place to gather with family and friends, spend a week camping under the 100 year old pines, base your hunting trip, or test your fishing skills against the lake’s bounty. Named for Jacob Wesley Payne, one of the area’s early settlers, Payne Lake has stood the test of time providing over a half century of recreation enjoyment. Today the area presents a variety of options for the visitor. Campsites range from those with the modern electrical and water hook-ups for recreational vehicles to basic tent pads for the true outdoor enthusiast. All camp sites include a picnic table and fire ring or grill. Sanitary facilities are provided throughout the area. Fishing regulations are posted at the lake. Oakmulgee managers are working with a variety partners to re-position Payne Lake to embrace a new generation of recreationists while at the same time holding close its heritage and importance to the local community. Payne Lake Recreation Area is a fee-use area, with 95% of the fees collected returned as investments to the Recreation Area. Fees are charged for all entries to the area.

Outdoor work includes: assisting in landscape, trail, and facility maintenance, conducting biological surveys and studies such as bird banding counts, leading tours and providing information and interpretation to the visiting public, assisting in habitat modification projects, such as developing freshwater impoundments and reforestation, and photographing a variety of natural and cultural resources.
