Opportunity Description:
Make a difference in the world….kill invasive plants! Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument has been invaded by buffelgrass, an invasive plant native to Africa and the Middle East. The volunteers who agree to help us manage this species will be walking (sometimes long distances) in the beautiful backcountry of Organ Pipe, looking for and removing buffelgrass. Sometimes as much as 10 miles are walked in a day. Sometimes days are spent digging up plants with hand tools. You will be using a GPS unit to track your path and record buffelgrass occurrences, so you will need to know or be willing to learn how to use a GPS unit. An accurate, up-to-date work log must be kept. You’ll also need to assist with the care of the project’s work vehicle. Experienced people will train you in GPS, record keeping, and other procedures. Sometimes you’ll pitch in with other resource management projects. You’ll have a work schedule but we hope you’ll be flexible about which days of the week you’ll work. We expect you to work 3-4 days per week. Our preferred candidates will: • Be a couple • Have a positive, helpful and friendly attitude • Be self-motivated and energetic • Feel comfortable working outdoors all day in the backcountry • Be able to hike 5-10 miles per day in uneven terrain • Know how to use a GPS unit or be willing to learn • Develop the ability to distinguish buffelgrass from native grass species • Be able to bend & stoop frequently and lift 10-40 pounds • Have a valid driver’s license and good driving record • Be able to drive on rough dirt roads and operate a 4-WD vehicle • Always practice safe work habits
