Opportunity Description: Location Description This 71,000-acre park features beech/maple and pine/oak forests, rivers, inland lakes, miles of Lake Michigan beach, two offshore islands, historic farming district, a lighthouse, one rustic and one modern campground and 55 miles of hiking trails. Position Description CAMPGROUND HOSTS, INTERPRETERS, and VISITOR CENTER VOLUNTEERS are needed spring through fall. Especially need people with cultural history backgrounds who can stay all of July and August. Free campsites may be available. Uniforms provided.
Opportunity Description: The National Park Service and its major non-profit partner, the North Country Trail Association, are seeking long-term volunteers to build, maintain, and promote the North Country National Scenic Trail throughout the Grand Marais Chapter of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This section of the North Country National Scenic Trail covers approximately 150 miles from the mouth of the Two-Hearted River, westward to the city of Grand Marais, and eventually to the city of Munising and the Rock River Canyon. Much of the trail is routed through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, following the Lake Superior shoreline along what is known as the "Shipwreck Coast." Remnants of the past such as shipwrecks, lighthouses, lifesaving stations, homesteads, logging camps, and historic communities are in evidence along the way. Volunteers working on this section of the trail will be helping to revitalize a Chapter in need of additional assistance. Trail work may include brushing and mowing the trail route, clearing deadfall, maintaining trail blazes, working with hand tools to clear the trail tread of tripping hazards, and even working with chainsaws for those who are able and interestred in doing so. Tools, training, and safety equipment are provided. For those less interested in outdoor manual labor, the Grand Marais Chapter is also in need of volunteers to fill key positions in administrative support services (coordinating work events and social hikes, working with computers to help track and record volunteer hours, updating the Chapter website, mailing news bulletins to other volunteers, promoting the North Country National Scenic Trail within local communities, etc.). In its entirety, the North Country National Scenic Trail spans 4,600 miles across seven northern states, making it the nation's longest hiking trail. Opportunity Description: Join a Boreal Expedition at Isle Royale! Boreal expeditions are an incredible opportunity for you be a part of the world renowned wolf-moose research project at Isle Royale. Each expedition involves a week-long trek though the boreal forests of Isle Royale. The basic purpose of each expedition team is very simple - to carefully search as much area as possible for moose bones. The expedition will also record other important observations and collect other valuable data. You’ll learn about the natural history of Isle Royale and its wilderness ecosystem. An experienced guide will lead you on the expedition. Once you arrive on the island, your group will be completely on its own and out of contact with other people. You will see Isle Royale in a way that very few other people do, and you'll come away with a new understanding of the natural world and how it works. These expeditions are strenous with off trail hiking and are suited for experienced backpackers only. There is a charge to participate. Opportunity Description: ASSISTANT PURSER. Assist the Purser on the RANGER III on voyages to and from Isle Royale. Issue backcountry camping permits and assist with visitor information, trip planning, and interpretive programs. Position is based in Houghton and overnights twice a week on the island. Housing is not provided, although rent assistance may be available. Applications due March 15.
Opportunity Description: NATURAL RESOURCES TECHNICIAN. Assist the Natural Resource Management branch in water, air quality, and acid rain monitoring. Field sampling and reporting lab measurements. Monitoring and inventorying bald eagle, osprey, and loon populations. Compiling backcountry permit data. Assisting with the location and removal of exotic plant species. Assisting with a variety of field research efforts, which vary from season to season. Applications due March 15.
Opportunity Description: MUSEUM ASSISTANT. Assist the Cultural Resources division in care of the museum collection in Houghton. Duties include computer entry and updating of catalog records, museum inventories, responding to research requests, monitoring storage environment, and limited conservation work.
Opportunity Description: LIBRARIAN/RESOURCE CENTER. Locate and provide resource information and materials for Visitor Education and Interpretation staff in support of the park-wide interpretive program. The volunteer is responsible for the park library and interpretive resource center, including cataloging, shelving, and overseeing book loans; inventorying and maintaining audio-visual equipment; and cataloging and filing 35mm slides. Applicants should be well-organized and willing to work ona wide variety of staff support projects. There is an opportunity to present interpretive programs at a campground and work at a visitor center on occasion.
Opportunity Description: CAMPGROUND HOST. Live and work in a remote backcountry campground and assist the Ranger division and Visitor Services by issuing camping permits, providing information, conducting interpretive programs, performing campground maintenance, patrolling trails, and providing first aid and emergency assistance.
Opportunity Description: CULTURAL RESOURCES. Assist the Cultural Resources Program in maintaining the park historic photo collection and in documenting park activities. The volunteer will also assist with ongoing NEPA compliance, cultural resources projects, and historical research. Experience working with computer scanners and photo software would be helpful. Ability to take documentary photographs of cultural sites, objects, and National Park Service operations is required.
Opportunity Description: WILDERNESS BACKCOUNTRY RANGER. Volunteer works in a variety of resource protection and educational assignments. Work includes conducting foot patrols and canoe/kayak patrols in the backcountry and wilderness areas. Volunteer educates visitors on Leave no Trace principles. Applications due March 15
