Volunteer Internships - Environmental Education

  ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS:  If you enjoy working with people, love the outdoors, and want to spend your summer at beautiful Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you!

  Number of Positions:  Three volunteer internships available- dates flexible May – August 2011

  Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA.  The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina.  Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities.  The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth and church groups.  The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public.

  Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger.  Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs.  Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs.  All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40.

  Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages.  A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required.  Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field.  Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license.

An orientation session for volunteers will be conducted before beginning, and specific job duties will be discussed at that time.

Period of Service
Volunteers may work any length of time up to 8 hours a day. If the volunteer proves to be unsatisfactory, services may be terminated at any time at the discretion of the Division.

CAMPGROUND HOST JOB DESCRIPTION
This position is located at the family camping area at Hanging Rock State Park, Danbury, North Carolina. The applicant chosen will serve as a volunteer campground host providing a variety of services.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • During a prearranged length of stay between March 15 and November 30, volunteers serve as “live-in” hosts at the campground. The primary responsibility is to assist campers by registering campers, issuing camping permits, answering questions and explaining Park Rules and Regulations. Occasionally the host may also be asked to serve in the Visitor Center. It would be helpful if the volunteer was familiar with other State and National Parks and Recreation Areas. Once arrived, hosts will have to become familiar with local points of interest and the location of services and facilities that might be requested by campers.
  • Hosts will have the freedom to adjust their schedule, however the goal is to have all campers registered by park closing time. Registering campers can be accomplished by having them stop at your site (site 42), or you stopping by their site. Campground signage must reflect which ever method is chosen. An electric vehicle or park truck will be provided. See park personnel for details.
  • Host will also perform light maintenance work around the campground such as litter pick-up, stocking of toilet facilities and selling firewood. Major repair problems will be reported to park personnel.
  • Campground hosts shall take no law enforcement measures , but will help provide minimum security against vandalism and other unlawful activities by their presence and ability to contact park personnel or local law enforcement officials.
  • To ensure contact with a majority of the Park’s campers, hosts will be required to work weekends, holidays, and evening hours. Otherwise hours and days of work will be coordinated with park personnel.

Hours
Hours and days of work will be coordinated with park personnel and are subject to change. Working hours will vary day to day, however one can expect to work 20-30 hours a week. A typical week would be Monday, Thursday & Sunday: 4 hours per day, Friday & Saturday: 8 hours per day, with Tuesday and Wednesday off.

Other Requirements of Work
  • This position requires knowledge of State Park programs and regulations. Volunteers must display a willingness to deal with campground users in a cheerful and helpful manner. Hosts must present a neat and pleasing appearance at all times and be courteous but firm in dealing with the recreating public.
  • Campground hosts must set an example of being “model” campers, practicing good housekeeping at their site, and by observing all State Park Rules and Regulations.
  • The assigned campsite will be identified with a “Camper Host” sign, and volunteers will be required to wear a State Park Vest or nametag provided. Hosts will not be entitled to Workman’s Compensation.

Benefits
The host program is an opportunity to become involved in the management of a NC State Park area. Campground hosts will be allowed to stay in the campground and use the park’s facilities free of charge. The park will provide electric, water, and sewer hook-up at the host site. Hosts may have visitors stay at the host campsite free of charge. However, certain site capacity and vehicle parking restrictions will apply.

Control Over Position
Hosts will report to park personnel but are generally expected to work without direct supervision. Rangers will be available to answer questions, discuss problems, and handle law enforcement situations. An orientation session for hosts will be conducted at the beginning of each stay and specific job duties will be discussed at that time.

Period of Service
Volunteer hosts are required to be available for a 1 month period. Some considerations may be given for an extended period of time. If the host proves to be unsatisfactory, services and camping privileges may be terminated at any time at the discretion of the Division.

Season of Program

Hanging Rock State Park has over 18 miles worth of hiking trails. All are in need of various attention from water bar placement, fill dirt replacement, signage placement, trimming, water crossing improvements, and debris removal.

06A Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Visitor Center

Description: This volunteer position is located at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Museum and Visitor Center within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, near Buxton, NC.

The Museum and Visitor Center are open year-round. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open from the 3rd Friday in April to Columbus Day.

Duties: Staffs bottom and top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; provides safety messages to visitors; collects tickets; monitors weather conditions; serves as a tour guide at the top of the Lighthouse; orients visitors to attractions and programs within, and outside, the park; answers telephones; answers visitor questions, and; provides one-on-one informational contacts with visitors on park grounds as assigned.

Physical Requirements: All volunteers working at the lighthouse MUST be physically fit. When the lighthouse is open, volunteers are required to climb the 257 lighthouse spiral steps several times per day, often in hot and humid conditions, to perform duties.

Setting: Buxton, NC is a small village located on Hatteras Island. A small grocery store, bank and restaurants can all be found within Buxton.

Weather: Summers can be hot, humid, and buggy (mosquitoes). Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor'easter storms.

Transportation: Personal transportation (bike or motorized vehicle) is required as it is several miles to get to local stores outside of the park. There is no public transportation on, or to, the Outer Banks.

Medical Facilities: The local medical center provides basic treatment. The nearest hospital is over one hour away.

Housing: Volunteer RV hook-ups within the park may be available, which include electric, water, sewer, and laundry in exchange for commitment of 30 hrs per week for 6 weeks minimum. Housing in the local community is difficult to secure and expensive. If you want to live outside of the park, then you must find your own housing.

Opportunity Description: 
Pisgah Ranger District - Information Assistant: Duties include greeting visitors, providing assistance with hiking trails, sightseeing, waterfall locations and other information about the forest and local area, both in person or by phone. Accepts items or reports of lost items, reports of damage or injuries. Assist with some admin duties as needed. Provides sales assistance for Intrepretative gift shop.

Knowledge and abilities: Able to communicate both in person and by phone to answer questions, give directions, provide rules and regulations. Ability to read a map. Ability to operate a cash register. Requires periods of standing. Requires ability to deal with difficult customers.

Training is provided as well as shadowing of more experienced volunteers.

High visitation season is divided into two sessions - April 1 to July 31 and August 1 to November 30. We are open 7 days a week (Sundays from 1:00 - 5:00). Commitment for a complete session is requested. In exchange for campsite we expect three days work per week, generally consecutive days.

Campsites are limited so we prefer couples. It is also possible to have one partner work in the visitor center and one work outside with maintenance or campsite clean up.
