Nature Center Volunteer:
The US Army Corps of Engineers is seeking volunteers for John H. Kerr Reservoir’s nature programs! You may volunteer at the Joseph S. J. Tanner Environmental Education (Nature) Center. Programs include school field trips and classroom presentations. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. By volunteering at Kerr Lake, you will gain valuable experience in the Corps’ management of parks and natural resources! You must be at least 18 years of age. (Updated 01/26/2015)

Volunteer positions that are available:
Volunteer Hosts in the Visitor Center – Provides valuable information to park visitors, answers phones and 2 ways radios, maintains the brochure program, keep accurate records in log-book and sells annual passes.
Parks Beautification - gardening, mowing grass, trimming trees
Park Safety Inspections – Inspects playgrounds and all parks for hazardous conditions.
Boat Patrol Assistant to Rangers
Educational Outreach Programs – Provides environmental and water safety programs at campgrounds and beach areas.
Maintaining/Building Trails and Maintenance of other Park Facilities
Boundary Line Inspections – Requires extensive hiking through steep rough terrain.
Campground Host - Provides valuable information to park visitors collects camping fees, performs minor maintenance and lakeshore cleanup.

Shoreline Management Volunteer:
This Position is Year Round 2015.
John H. Kerr Reservoir is a massive 50,000 acre lake located near Boydton, Virginia and extends 39 miles up the Roanoke River along 900 miles of wooded shoreline that stretches across three counties in Virginia and three in North Carolina. Throughout the Kerr Lake area, you can find opportunities to boat, fish, camp, swim, picnic, hike, and hunt. The Corps of Engineers operate four campgrounds and numerous day-use facilities for boat launching, swimming and picnicking. Intensive wildlife management techniques are also employed in twenty-six developed areas, consisting of over 10,000 acres of land. These areas provide opportunities for hunting, hiking, and wildlife watching.
The staff at John H. Kerr is looking for volunteers to assist its shoreline management section with converting files to digital media. Volunteers will need to be familiar with windows based computers, Adobe Acrobat professional software as well as digital scanners. Skills necessary for the position will require attention to detail, work in an office setting, filing, copying, scanning documents and familiarity with computers. (Updated 12/30/2014)
